Dancefloor
The Holloways Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was standing on the dancefloor
and a pretty thing caught my eye
She was looking at me, smiling at me
and now shes dancing with me
So I must be pretty, if I'm standing here with people like you
I must be pretty, like you

We departed the dancefloor
and we fought our way to the bar
I had just enough for her wine
So I bought a drink, she necked it down
lit up a cigarette and blew smoke in my eye
and I started to cry, and she laughed in my face

Please tell me, where are my friends when I need them now? haha
Where are my friends when I'm alone

I've got a feeling for the dancefloor,
cause there playing my favourite song
Theres such a buzz about this place
Wait a minute, all my friends have gone

Where are my friends, when I need them now? haha
Where are my friends when I'm alone in the night time?
in the night time
alone in the night time
please tell me how do I get home?

How will I find love tonight
in a loveless city?

It's must be getting near closing time
so dont turn on the lights
This night is young, as we are
We're not ready to go
and now your standing on the streetside
and your sweat will turn to ice
and all your moneys gone cause you
spent it all on that stupid fucking girl

Oh where are my friends, when I need them now? haha
Where are my friends when I'm alone in the night time?
in the night time
alone in the night time
Please tell me how will I get home
I'm so alone, in the night time
in the night time, alone in the night time
please tell me how will I get home
how will I get home tonight?

I havent got no money
and how will I find love love love love love in a loveless city?

Overall Meaning

The Holloways' song Dancefloor is a story about a night out that doesn't go as planned. The song starts with the singer describing how he was standing on the dancefloor and a pretty girl caught his eye. She smiles at him, and they start dancing together. He feels flattered by her attention and thinks that he must be pretty himself to be in the company of someone like her. However, as the night progresses, things take a turn for the worse. They leave the dancefloor and go to the bar, where she drinks his wine and blows smoke in his face. He feels humiliated and wonders where his friends are when he needs them. He then describes his love for the dancefloor and the feeling of being surrounded by a buzzing atmosphere, but he suddenly realizes that his friends have gone. He's left alone, with no money and no one to go home with. He then wonders if he'll ever find love in a loveless city.

The lyrics of Dancefloor are relatable to anyone who has ever had a disappointing night out. The song captures the excitement of going out and having fun, but also the loneliness and frustration that can come when things don't go as planned. The singer's yearning for love and connection is a universal theme that resonates with many people. The chorus of the song, "Where are my friends when I need them now?", is a sentiment that many have felt at one point or another.

i love/loved the Holloways... saw them twice and they were 2 of the best gigs i've ever seen.

how desperately unfair life can be.. their record company went under after the 2nd album, a fire destroyed most of their music, promo gear and instruments and Rob Skipper died....

they should have been the best band in the country.... they'll never be a band again instead.

thanks for the memories guys. ☺😢
