Bittersweet
The Hoodoo Gurus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You are my sword.
Your love is its own reward.
My heart, I have found,
Gets carved surely by the pound.

God knows. I tried,
Tried to hold you with all my might
But time has won,
And I could never be that strong.
(Don't cry) I couldn't be that strong,
(Don't cry) That used to be my favourite song.
(Don't cry) Tears so bittersweet
Fill my eyes whenever we meet,
It's always bittersweet.

I cut and I bleed.
You seem to find that so hard to believe!
That's just too, too bad.
You could never touch the love that we had.

(Don't cry) For the love we had,
(Don't cry) Sometimes we try to take it back.
(Don't cry) Tears so bittersweet
Kiss my cheeks whenever we meet.
It's always bittersweet.

(Don't Cry) For a love-gone-wrong
(Don't cry) That used to be my favourite song
(Don't cry) Tears so bittersweet
Kiss my eyes whenever we meet.
Anyway...

We've grown and times change.
When we meet now it feels so strange.
I hold you like a sword

You won't cut me like you did before.
It's always bittersweet.

Overall Meaning

The Hoodoo Gurus's Bittersweet is a song about the end of a romantic relationship. The first stanza describes the impact of the love that the singer had for their significant other. The symbolism of the sword serves as a metaphor of their lover cutting into their heart. The line, "Your love is its own reward," suggests that even though the relationship is over, the love still exists and is cherished by the singer. The second stanza talks about how the singer tried to hold onto the relationship despite the obstacles they faced. The lines "But time has won, and I could never be that strong" indicate that time has taken its toll, and the singer could not fight its influence. The chorus begins with the line "Don't cry," indicating that even though the relationship ended, the singer wants to keep their emotions in check. However, the tears that are so bittersweet fill the singer's eyes every time they meet their ex-partner. The final stanza describes how the singer feels when they see their ex after a long time. The line, "It feels so strange" shows that the singer experiences a mix of emotions, and they don't know how to react. Overall, the song captures the complex feelings that accompany the end of a relationship, such as sadness, regret, and longing.

Had a lot of hits and mainstream airplay. Not too many can say that. I think they did well!

Adam Stamp

I didn't realise they were big outside Australian

@Sherry Morris I used to listen to them in high school in the late 80's early 90's in California... they did get some airplay on KROQ in Los Angeles also in the mid 90's... not sure if they still do over there.

Right of the Line

@Adam Stamp me and my friends out in Hawaii used to put them on every weekend driving to the north or west shore to surf back in the 80's. 1 was from Texas, 1 from Louisianna and I was from Florida. We all knew them, anyone who surfed back then knew Hoodoo Gurus it was just a thing.
