Money To Be Made
The Hoosiers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's money to be made
Continue your charade
Money to be made
What you're asking for means the world to me
You draw close as you whisper precisely
Precisely
Your safety is assured,
Behind those eggshell walls
Of yours
You're safety is assured,
Behind those eggshell walls
Of yours
Friends and family fly by on wings of faith
Faithlessly I don't recognize a face
Not a single face
Take this sorry soul
Made enough of a mess on my own
On my own
Put up your barricades
There's money to be made
The Hoosiers's song Money To Be Made, appears on their 2010 album, The Illusion of Safety, and is a commentary on the state of the music industry, where success is often measured by monetary wealth. In the first verse, the lyrics "Put up your barricades, there's money to be made" suggest that the music industry is fierce, and that those who are successful have done so by putting up walls, or barriers, around themselves to protect their earnings. This creates a charade, where performers present themselves in a certain way to generate more revenue. The repetition of "Money to be made" also underscores the idea that economic gain is the ultimate goal.
The second verse shifts the focus to a personal relationship. The lyrics "What you're asking for means the world to me, you draw close as you whisper precisely" express a sense of intimacy and trust, as well as some degree of desperation. However, this is contrasted with a feeling of isolation, that comes through in the lines "Friends and family fly by on wings of faith, faithlessly I don't recognize a face, not a single face." This suggests a sense of disconnection, both from the world of the music industry, and from personal relationships.
The chorus returns to the theme of monetary success, with the lyrics "Put up your barricades, there's money to be made." The song captures the essential tension between financial success and personal fulfillment, suggesting that the two do not necessarily go hand in hand.
