NOBODY BUT YOU
The Hooters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My wicked ways have drank the wine of the world and its delights
But I've never tasted anything as sweet as you tonight
I've driven down these boulevards and I've found Love's Avenue
But of all I've seen well I learned one thing...

I don't want nobody but you...Your elegant interior had me fooled
I must admit But when it comes to comfort there's no finer place to sit
You've driven me to doing things no honest man would do
But I've never seen such a fine machine...I don't want nobody but you...

Well I'm lying in your flower bed I'm drunk on your perfume
Just waiting for the seeds I planted once to come in bloom

You ravage me you savage me and you know I love it too
So away we fly just you and I...I don't want nobody but you...I don't want nobody but you...

Overall Meaning

The Hooters's song Nobody But You is a love song about the singer's experience of wandering through different roads in search of true love, an elegant interior, and experiencing different kinds of delights the world has to offer. Despite his many experiences, nothing compares to the sweet taste he gets from being with his partner. He confesses that he has been led to do things that no upright person would, but he loves every moment of it. The second verse, in particular, talks of how he has been fooled by what he has seen outside, but once he got to know his partner's interior, it was the most comfortable and appealing place to be. The bridge then talks of him being intoxicated by her perfume while lying in her flower bed, waiting for their love to blossom. He doesn't want anyone but her, despite his past experiences.

The song's melody, rhythm, and lyrics combined to create an upbeat, energetic, and joyous feeling, precisely what love does to people. Marc Cohn and Eric Bazilian wrote the song, and the latter collaborated with another band, "Cyndi Lauper," for the hit song "Time After Time." The song was released in 1987 as part of their album "One Way Home," peaking at 87 on the US charts.
