The Gloves single arrived early in 2007, heralding the release of the Horrors' full-length debut, Strange House, which arrived in the U.K. that March and in the U.S. in May. In 2008, Webb and Furse formed the analog synth project Spider & the Flies, and released the album Something Clockwork This Way Comes. For 2009's Primary Colours, the band worked with Cunningham and Portishead's Geoff Barrow as co-producers, opting for a very different sound that mixed shoegaze, post-punk, and goth; the album was released by XL that spring and earned several critical raves, including NME's Album of the Year. In between albums, Badwan teamed with Canadian opera singer Rachel Zeffira for the hazy pop project Cat's Eyes, which released its self-titled debut in early 2011. The Horrors self-produced their follow-up, 2011's Skying, which featured a lighter yet still atmospheric sound that drew comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and the Psychedelic Furs. In 2012, they released the remix companion album Higher and embarked on an extensive tour. In 2013, they began recording new material with producer Craig Silvey. Early the following year, the single "I See You" reflected the more expansive direction of their fourth album, Luminous, which arrived in May 2014. The Horrors began work on their next full-length with Paul Epworth at London's Church Studios in 2015, and forged a darker, rawer yet still danceable sound that borrowed from '80s post-punk, synth-pop, and '90s dance. The result was V, which arrived in September 2017.

03. Draw Japan
The Horrors Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Animals too placed in plastic cages, carted around these filthy pages
I will draw Japan
Spectres holding scepters with fingers thin, empty vessels asserting,
"We are still King, we are still King"
Black stuff running like nosebleed danger
Swarming towards the source of the noise
Black cells depict a foreign land, I draw Japan
Sleeping city emits no sound, in this compound
No beast a walks, in this compound
No beast a walks, in this compound
I will draw Japan with a ravenous pen, hungry for oil and iron and tin
To your left a concrete factory, smoke billows, fists punch, "Victory!"
And my hands start shaking, and Japan starts shaking
And I begin to draw out Japan, in the shape of a man
Seen rushing through a market town, through the compound
No beast a walks in this compound
No beast a walks in this compound
The lyrics to The Horrors' song Draw Japan paint a haunting picture of destruction and decay. The first verse describes the act of drawing with a "ravenous pen", carving out trees and scoring skin. The imagery is visceral and violent, suggesting a disregard for nature and life. The next lines describe the placement of animals in plastic cages and their transportation on "filthy pages". The repetition of "I will draw Japan" creates a sense of obsession or compulsion, as if the act of drawing is a necessary but destructive force.
The second verse introduces the idea of "spectres holding scepters with fingers thin", empty but still asserting their power. This could be a commentary on the ruling class or the powerful elite. The description of "black stuff running like nosebleed danger" and "swarming towards the source of the noise" suggests a chaotic and destructive force that is overtaking everything in its path. Despite this, the singer is still determined to draw Japan, using "fervent hands" to create a depiction of a foreign land.
The final verse describes a "sleeping city" where "no beast walks", suggesting a lifeless and sterile environment. The factory belching smoke and fists punching in "victory" create an image of industry and aggression. The hands of the singer start shaking as the country of Japan itself begins to shake, demonstrating the power of individual actions to impact the world around them.
Overall, the lyrics to Draw Japan present a bleak and unsettling view of human impact on nature and society. The act of drawing is portrayed as both creative and destructive, reflecting the complex relationship between humanity and the world around us.
