The Gloves single arrived early in 2007, heralding the release of the Horrors' full-length debut, Strange House, which arrived in the U.K. that March and in the U.S. in May. In 2008, Webb and Furse formed the analog synth project Spider & the Flies, and released the album Something Clockwork This Way Comes. For 2009's Primary Colours, the band worked with Cunningham and Portishead's Geoff Barrow as co-producers, opting for a very different sound that mixed shoegaze, post-punk, and goth; the album was released by XL that spring and earned several critical raves, including NME's Album of the Year. In between albums, Badwan teamed with Canadian opera singer Rachel Zeffira for the hazy pop project Cat's Eyes, which released its self-titled debut in early 2011. The Horrors self-produced their follow-up, 2011's Skying, which featured a lighter yet still atmospheric sound that drew comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and the Psychedelic Furs. In 2012, they released the remix companion album Higher and embarked on an extensive tour. In 2013, they began recording new material with producer Craig Silvey. Early the following year, the single "I See You" reflected the more expansive direction of their fourth album, Luminous, which arrived in May 2014. The Horrors began work on their next full-length with Paul Epworth at London's Church Studios in 2015, and forged a darker, rawer yet still danceable sound that borrowed from '80s post-punk, synth-pop, and '90s dance. The result was V, which arrived in September 2017.

The Horrors Lyrics

With sorrow difficult and bright
She had decided to sever her ties
As the horizon burned, she turned
The wind combed through her hair like high notes
Tinkling furrows across the sky
There would be tears, flowers, long shadows
The jets would dive
Away, away, away you go
Before they push you under
Away, away, away you go
Before they pull you in
She held herself up at the high point
A joining of decision and dismay
And clay was forming over her feet
As the horizon blurred
She turned and she knew
Away, away, away you go
Before they push you under
Away, away, you let it go
Before it pulls you in
Cold into the current, there she goes
Cold into the current, there she goes
Cold into the current, there she goes
Cold into the current, there she goes
The way it is, the way it goes,
The way it gets you down, you know
The way it is, the way it goes
The way it gets you down
Away, away, away you go
Before they push you under, you know
Away, away, away you go
Before it pulls you in
Away, away, you let it go
Before they pushed you under the ground
Away, away, you let it go
Before it pulls you in
The lyrics to The Horrors' "Dive In" paint a picture of a woman who has made the difficult decision to sever ties and move on from a situation. She lays her thoughts out on the table with sorrow that is both difficult and bright. The horizon burns as she turns, and the wind combs through her hair like high notes, tinkling furrows across the sky. Amid tears, flowers, long shadows, and diving jets, the woman stands at the high point, a joining of decision and dismay. Clay forms over her feet, and the horizon blurs as she turns and knows that it is time to let go.
The song speaks to the struggles and complexities of making a difficult decision, knowing when it is time to move on, and the potential for pain and sorrow that come with it. The woman in the song knows that she must go "away, away, away you go before they push you under" and "away, away, you let it go before it pulls you in." The chorus repeats these lyrics, highlighting the urgency and necessity of letting go before being pulled under the ground.
The imagery used in the lyrics is potent, painting a picture of a woman struggling with letting go against the backdrop of a burning horizon, wind, and diving jets. The lyrics also touch on themes of change, growth, and facing difficult truths, even when it's painful. "Dive In" is an insightful and evocative song that speaks to the human experience of making hard choices and moving on.
