The Gloves single arrived early in 2007, heralding the release of the Horrors' full-length debut, Strange House, which arrived in the U.K. that March and in the U.S. in May. In 2008, Webb and Furse formed the analog synth project Spider & the Flies, and released the album Something Clockwork This Way Comes. For 2009's Primary Colours, the band worked with Cunningham and Portishead's Geoff Barrow as co-producers, opting for a very different sound that mixed shoegaze, post-punk, and goth; the album was released by XL that spring and earned several critical raves, including NME's Album of the Year. In between albums, Badwan teamed with Canadian opera singer Rachel Zeffira for the hazy pop project Cat's Eyes, which released its self-titled debut in early 2011. The Horrors self-produced their follow-up, 2011's Skying, which featured a lighter yet still atmospheric sound that drew comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and the Psychedelic Furs. In 2012, they released the remix companion album Higher and embarked on an extensive tour. In 2013, they began recording new material with producer Craig Silvey. Early the following year, the single "I See You" reflected the more expansive direction of their fourth album, Luminous, which arrived in May 2014. The Horrors began work on their next full-length with Paul Epworth at London's Church Studios in 2015, and forged a darker, rawer yet still danceable sound that borrowed from '80s post-punk, synth-pop, and '90s dance. The result was V, which arrived in September 2017.

She's out of sight
Did you see
She's always cool and bright
Waiting for her, oh
You know you're wasting your time
With Monica Gems, oh
People say, oh
She keeps them cool and bright
People say, oh
You're wasting all your time
With Monica Gems, Monica Gems,
Monica Gems, Monica
Did you see, oh
She's out of sight
Did you see, oh
She's cool and bright
Waiting for she, oh
You'll be waiting all your life
Monica Gems, oh
You know I think of her sometimes
Monica Gems
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Monica Gems, oh
And we've all been there for Monica, Monica
For Monica, Monica
For Monica, Monica
For Monica, Monica
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
The lyrics to The Horrors' song Monica Gems can be interpreted as a cautionary tale about idolising someone who appears to have it all, but is ultimately unattainable. The eponymous Monica Gems is presented as a distant figure who is effortlessly cool and bright, with people saying that she keeps them that way too. The singer of the song is waiting for her, but it's suggested that he's wasting his time because she's out of sight and ultimately unattainable. The repetition of her name throughout the song, as well as the repetition of certain lines, creates an almost hypnotic effect and emphasises the singer's fixation on her.
The chorus of the song features the repetition of "For Monica, Monica," which could be interpreted as a group of people rallying around her, either as fans or as people trying to win her affections. The final lines of the song, "You know I think of her sometimes," suggest that even though the singer knows he can't have her, he still can't help but think about her.
