The Horrors formed in the summer of 2005 and quickly gained notoriety around London for their look, sound, and brief but frantic live shows. Loog soon signed them, and the Horrors released their official debut single, "Sheena Is a Parasite/Jack the Ripper," in spring 2006. That summer the Horrors released their second single, Death at the Chapel. They also reissued "Sheena Is a Parasite" as a limited-edition DVD single. The song's startling video was directed by Chris Cunningham and featured actress Samantha Morton as Sheena. Late that summer, the band signed to Stolen Transmission in the U.S. and released a self-titled EP that fall. They also issued the Count in Fives single in the U.K. around that time.

The Gloves single arrived early in 2007, heralding the release of the Horrors' full-length debut, Strange House, which arrived in the U.K. that March and in the U.S. in May. In 2008, Webb and Furse formed the analog synth project Spider & the Flies, and released the album Something Clockwork This Way Comes. For 2009's Primary Colours, the band worked with Cunningham and Portishead's Geoff Barrow as co-producers, opting for a very different sound that mixed shoegaze, post-punk, and goth; the album was released by XL that spring and earned several critical raves, including NME's Album of the Year. In between albums, Badwan teamed with Canadian opera singer Rachel Zeffira for the hazy pop project Cat's Eyes, which released its self-titled debut in early 2011. The Horrors self-produced their follow-up, 2011's Skying, which featured a lighter yet still atmospheric sound that drew comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and the Psychedelic Furs. In 2012, they released the remix companion album Higher and embarked on an extensive tour. In 2013, they began recording new material with producer Craig Silvey. Early the following year, the single "I See You" reflected the more expansive direction of their fourth album, Luminous, which arrived in May 2014. The Horrors began work on their next full-length with Paul Epworth at London's Church Studios in 2015, and forged a darker, rawer yet still danceable sound that borrowed from '80s post-punk, synth-pop, and '90s dance. The result was V, which arrived in September 2017.

Honestly I don’t think a lot of girls understood it fully or comprehended the level of pain they would have to endure until they went thru it themselves.

It reminds me of the stories of women who underwent genital mutilation as little girls.

One of these women told me about her experience - she said that when she was young, she knew that when she was of age, she had to go thru a special ceremony that would be very painful and difficult and hard for her but it was necessary and that all the girls in her village had to get it done.

All the same, the practice did filter down to the working classes in China and even to the remotest villages, which made it very resistant to being eradicated from all of the country. There was an elderly woman I used to see in Chinatown (in San Francisco) at the market sometimes, who had very tiny feet. She could walk with a cane, but I always thought how painful that must have been for her!

Then one time we were stranded overnight at SFO because our flight was canceled, and they had a huge display of these Lotus Shoes, so I got to go around and look at all of them, and some were even tinier than the feet of the woman I knew from the market!

I went to China about 10-15 years ago and happen to run into a small museum that displayed the Golden Lotus shoes. There were at least two hundred pairs of them, and some of them were literally 3 inches only!!! I have to say the shoes were gorgeous, with intricate silk embroidery and all. I was in awe and couldn’t figure how women’s feet were able to fit into such extremely tiny shoes. It makes my heart break now I know exactly how they did it. So very very cruel and barbaric.

To actually get a feeling of this effect on the individual I recommend reading the book: Sunflower and the Secret Fan: The part of where the girls' feet are bound is so descriptive I cried whilst reading it. My late grandma had binding feet. As a child, I always remembered she walked super slow and could only walk short distance with a walker. She walked funny and unbalanced. It looked so painful when seeing her washing her feet. They looked so strange to me. I can’t imagine how she raised 8 children. Farming, cooking, and more. No electricity or gas....My other grandma didn’t have to bind her feet. She was much healthier and happy and lived a longer life. What a horrible history.

I heard another woman’s story where she tried to take her bandages off and her parents beat her so badly she passed out and then her mother bound her foot 2x harder to the point that it hurt her too much to even take off her bindings. Rather than gradually breaking her feet (since it was a process), her mom broke her toes all at once.

My mom told me my great-grandma who lived to 102 and died in 2020 was supposed to bind her foot. However, early on she decided to stop. She didn't see any real reason to do that. Her mom had died and her dad was really busy so no one cared that much if she stopped. Because of that, her foot was really normal.

i’m usually not very queasy, but this is so horrible. this legitimately made my stomach flip, and i started crying. the pain they must have went through, and the age? they were just little kids, they should’ve been running around laughing and playing instead of being forced to walk on warped, broken bones. only for a beauty standard that their families put them through. my heart goes out to the girls who passed because of this procedure, and to the women who have to suffer the consequences of the actions that were out of their control so many years ago. this is one of the most painful things i’ve ever heard of.

My grandma was also a woman with "small feet". In my memory, she always had her socks on and I've never saw her feet. I did not understand it neither. She was born in 1926 and passed away at the age of 94. I am the youngest grandson in the family, and I realize how ignorant I was. Hello, 100% ethnic Chinese here. My great-grandmother had her feet bound. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to meet her in person. From what I know, foot binding was mainly done not only because it was considered attractive at the time, but also because it restricted women from leaving their homes. This made Chinese women unable to leave their husbands. @Sukaaa oh come off it, corsets were a completely normal structural undergarments, used in different forms for hundreds of years by women of all social statuses. A few women tight-laced, but that was not the norm. Generally, corsets support the breasts from below, which doesn't stress the shoulders like bras do. They provide core support when lifting heavy things, distributed the weight of heavy skirts, and created the ideal silhouette through padding at the bust and hips, not cinching the waist. Bernadette Banner and Karolina Zebrowski have serveral good videos that debunk this myth. Think padded underwire bra, not torture device. Not everyone is going to like them, but most women would be completely comfortable wearing one.

My mom had her feet complimented once by someone from China because she naturally wore a US size 5.5 as an adult. I wear a US size 8.5 or 9 depending on the company and find my mom's feet super small.

My grandmother and my aunt had their feet bound. I never met either one since my parents fled to Taiwan during the communism revolution. My mother was about 10 when bound feet was abolished, so she never had to do it. Her older sister, on the other hand, wasn't so lucky. My mom's memory of her mother was that she was in constant pain. My grandfather was very against it so they waited until they were threatened by the locals to bind my aunt's feet. By the time the practice was abolished, it was too late. There is no going back.

I am a retired RN and I had a patient who had her feet bound. I was in my mid- twenties in the late 70's early 80's, and she had a broken hip and had surgery. I remember her feet looked exactly like the images in this video. It was a concern about her walking after surgery with Physical Therapy, but it wasn't a problem. I believe she wore her bound foot shoes, and used a walker. I only remember it was not a problem. I had not believed I would see that in my lifetime.

I suffered an injury that led to a condition called Charcot foot. Usually seen in diabetics because of their peripheral neuropathy, I had nerve damage from a knee reconstruction surgery. None of my bones broke, but all the bones in the foot separate, leading the arch to fall and the foot to spread (there's a really good cgi animation on YouTube.)
My podiatrist wanted to do a reconstruction; I wouldn't regain function, but it would "look" like a foot. I kept getting abscesses until finally I got a below knee amputation about ten months ago. I'm glad to have a prosthesis; but it's not like you put it on, have a few weeks of PT, and away you go. My core muscles are shot, I don't have any endurance to go very far... I'm not young anymore either. If this had happened in my twenties instead of my forties it would be a world of difference.

I have no idea how these women managed to walk their entire lives like this. When your feet are crippled, there's really no quality of life

I think the parents figured their daughters would be worse off without the bound feet. I've read that some Chinese mothers couldn't bring themselves to put their daughters through foot binding, but later on, their daughters would hate them because their lives as unmarriagable women were horrible.

I never heard about foot binding in such great detail; I knew it was bad but I never knew it was THIS HORRIFYING. I'm physically uncomfortable and shifting constantly; I'm an empath so my anxiety is way on Mars right now. SMH, I am SO grateful for my size ten feet and being born in a totally different time and culture that would've put people in jail over this. This is totally horrific. When I was at school, they took us on an excursion to this Museum at Aberdeen University (Marischall College) and, along with a real mummy and other horrors, there were these bound feet, God alone knows who let them hack the feet off a corpse, but they were there and they were the stuff of nightmares to me. I am on the Autism spectrum and can't bear clothing tags against my skin or pressure against my ankles so I don't know how anyone could do this to a child! Of course it's done so men can enjoy it. It's for the same reason, some king or other, wanting to see his children born, unobstructed, is why we all have kids lying on our backs now, when any honest doctor will tell you that squatting is the natural position. Gravity does half the work, that's why so many women used to lose their lives in childbirth, because they were told to lie on their backs. I can tell you, from experience, nearly every OTHER position feels better than lying on your back. There's something inherently cruel about Chinese and Japanese culture. I can't describe it but I really think its the reason for so many suicides, and the drop in the birth rate. People there care more about what strangers think of them, than their own families, or that's how it looks from the West.

My late grandma, whom past away more than 2 decades ago, had her feet bound when she was young. And when she was older, for some unknown reason she had it unbounded. At young age, I saw how deformed my grandma feet were. Yet, it always amazed me by how fast and how far she could walk with those deformed tiny feet. Getting a shoes to fit those unbounded deformed feet had always been a challenge. In the early days, there were still shops or craft men whom handmade shoes specially for bounded feet and those that were unbounded. But with the decreased population of bounded feet, the demand also decreased and the trade died off eventually. My grandma had to end up getting children’s size shoes and not all able to fit her unique shaped feet. This documentary really makes me miss my grandma. She was such a woman of great character being able to live through the culture of those days.

As a child, we were brought to a museum during a field trip, I wish I could remember which... but one of the exhibits was about foot binding. The fashion part of it, from woman to woman wasn't what was expressed to us. It was the work needs and pressures of marriage they seemed to focus on. I remember them stating that bound feet made it more difficult for wives to run away from their husbands or flee working in fields. It was also suggested that generations of women having their feet bound and getting use to walking on smaller feet had an evolutionary effect on the muscles within pelvic region. Altogether, it's quite horrible what people will put themselves through to achieve certain images of beauty.

See has Chinese ancestry herself and she puts a LOT of research into her books, even speaking to the people from those regions when possible.

In the nonfiction realm, there's a lot more to learn about foot binding. It's fascinating from a cultural perspective but of course, it's also gruesome to read at times.

I majored in Chinese language and culture in college and actually wrote my thesis around Chinese women’s position in their society and one of the topics I stumbled upon was this.. baffled me how they could possibly see this as a beauty standard. The girls/women couldn’t do much because it was painful and they couldn’t walk far, and that’s important so that no matter how much their husbands were mistreating them, they couldn’t leave.

honestly, everything I’ve read and found along the way about what the Chinese society did to women back then was so horrifying, including the era where they literally killed their infant daughters just as she was born bcs sons were more desirable. Also I despise confucius bcs his yin and yang concept further cemented the idea that men are generally stronger and better than women.

However they weren’t always that bad bcs I actually found a reading that said their predecessors were starting with matriarchy, but then developed into patriarchy when the men started to work harder on farming, thus providing food and economy.

Overall it was a hard thesis to write I genuinely got so mad every time I continued to write it, but I had to graduate 😭 so

If you got weird looking crooked toes/feet I bet it's because your shoes are too small. My dad was really weird about our shoes fitting correctly. I never really got to wear kids shoes. I wore a women's size 8 in 3rd grade. I felt bad about having "big feet" as a kid. But I didn't have big feet... everyone else was squeezing into small shoes and deforming thier feet. They don't even realize it. I pointed that out to my husband, 15 years ago. He was wearing a size 12 but was actually a 14/15. Over the years his toes uncurled a bit. He still can't spread his toes. If he wasn't "binding" his feet growing up I bet he'd be a size 16 today.

The British missionary and London parlourmaid Gladys Aylward played an important role as a westerner trusted enough by the local Chinese authorities to help stamp out the cruel custom of footbinding in the mountainous region of Shanxi (Shansi) from the village of Yangcheng. Her story is told in the book The Small Woman by Burgess and the Holywood movie from c 1959 starring Ingrid Bergman as Gladys in The Inn Of The Sixth Happiness. She was considered not qualified enough to learn Chinese by the British missionary society and so she saved up as a parlormaid and made the journey herself, quite a feat for anyone in those days.

She eventually was honoured by Chiang Kai Shek and asked to help teach Mandarin Chinese to the population in Taiwan after the Communist takeover in 1949. She renounced her British passport in order to become a Chinese citizen and as a result after the Communists expelled all westerners she was actually refused citizenship in British Hong Kong because she was Chinese!

Her main legacy was her success by being a woman in convincing families to stop binding their little girls' feet. She was eventually honoured back in her native London by having tea with the Queen at Buckingham Palace. She was very short and diminutive in height with dark hair and eyes which helped her blend in well among the native Chinese. She adopted many Chinese orphans and saved over 100 children single-handedly over the Shanxi mountains until they reached the safety of the Yellow River. She died in her orphanage in Taipei in 1970 aged 67 from pleurisy by giving her warm blanket she had been given to the children in the ophanage. Ingrid Bergman who acted her role was inspired by her story and was filming in Taiwan and hoped to eventually meet Gladys, however Gladys died just before this. Bergman visited her orphanage and was very surprised to see how frugally Gladys lived in a very small room with just one thin blanket. This made a lasting impression on the actress and Gladys' name bacame a household name after the film in1959, although Gladys never received a penny from the making of it.

Well worth looking up her true story. I knew her first cousin when I lived in England for a time and I travelled to find her grave in the outlying villages of Taipei. Her cousin too passed away just before this but his widow asked me to lay a white flower on her grave, which I did.

When I first learned about foot binding in elementary/middle school it was from reading The Good Earth and foot binding was a topic that was mentioned and I thought it was a great idea and wanted to do it to. In the book they didn’t go into depth about how it was done they were mostly focused on having it done so the daughter could have good marriage prospects and they also would compare her feet to her mothers feet which had never been bound due to her being brought up in as a servant and needing more mobility for her daily work. I thought it was just wrapping the feet to limit growth and I was all for it cause I felt like my feet wouldn’t stop growing. I even went so far as to ask my mother who was a nurse for more information and basically how to do it to which she explained that’s not something I want because it’s everything we just saw in this video, I’d most likely just end up bed ridden, and it’s illegal. So I went online and googled pictures of these women’s feet to understand what she meant and I honestly felt like shit for praising this practice.

I have feet on the larger side of normal, and I was so happy when the barefoot shoe movement started. Not only were the shoes more flat on the bottom giving me better balance, but they're made to be wide enough to have feet move naturally. I could finally get shoes that didn't squish my toes in. I can't imagine people squishing the toes even more. And why? Like did men think women had triangles for feet? Foot binding was in many cases only done for those of well respected families. Those, where the family is so poor, the daughters had to work. My great grandmother from my mom's side had the EU foot size 22. We wore the same shoe size back then. I was around 10 when we could exchange shoes. She's sadly passed away. 22 is around 5.5 in the US chart I think.

My family is from China, my grandmother was born in the 1930s and because she was raised in a farmer's family, all of her sister didn't get subjected to the bound feet tradition. As far as I know, her mother was from a better family, though not considered wealthy, she used to ride horses and as far as I know she didn't have bound feet so in my mind, it was a tradition got abolished before the 20th century.

Honestly, this is so evil. I don't care what era you're in or what the beauty standards are, to intentionally break the bones on the feet of your toddler and watch them cry out, and endure so much pain, you'd have to be seriously sick to actually sit back and watch that. That isn't due to some inherent sickness of the parents. It's very easy to look back and see how horrible it was for those young girls. But back then it was not only accepted, but promoted. Marriage back then isn't how we see it today. For a woman, it meant survival. I'm sure there were plenty of mothers and fathers whose heart broke at hearing the pain of their young girls, but thought it was ultimately for the sake of the daughter. Believing that it was good their daughters would have security after they were gone. I'm sure there are multiple things future generations will look back at and think was absolutely atrocious from our era. Like sitting back and eating animals we know have been tortured, but can't be bothered to give up Chic-Fil-A. But we all move through the society of our time.

It would have been best to try to find a way to not have to do that to your child’s feet if at all possible. And protect the child from harm, period. As a historian, I don't think I buy that the need to keep children still for labor is what drove foot binding, because the entire world pretty much had the same relationship to child/female labor involving processing the materials from raw form into threads and then fabric that then was involved in hand work, sewing, and piece work in the pre-industrial economy, but foot binding is unique to China. Taken as part of a wide range of methods unique to individual cultures in particularities but united by the common purposes of restricting women and exercising control over them I buy! In addition to hand crafting while seated, young girls also had the chore of getting water for Chinese homes. That wasn't mentioned here but did also play a role in the variability of ages at which girls were put through foot binding's first steps. People are so used to having water available in every way in the developed modern world, even pre-loaded into plastic bottles because twisting a cap off is easier to twisting the tap and filling up a pitcher for the fridge or some drinking container. That daily struggle to obtain water defined labor for many girls' lives in their earliest years of contributing to the family through work, and you wouldn't hobble girls from being able to do THAT just so that they instead could be involved in the fabric arts. If anything, it would likely go the other direction and become the chores that girls undergoing foot binding took on because they couldn't walk. Cloistering women was a universal achieved in a variety of ways across societies, and foot binding does fit in that type of practice.

Although: it is incorrect to assume that hauling water is THE universal primary task in all regions of the world.. if there are enough lakes, rivers, and wells for groundwater, then walking longer distances isn't necessary. Deciding which tasks are most economically necessary is probably relative to the region (and to the social class and profession and aspirations of the parents). It seems that in some regions of China where they depended on women to work in the field, girls probably grew up with normal feet. They were considered coarse peasant women, but they could walk freely.

She didn't meet with Washington or create "the" design for American flags (as there were a few versions). Yet she was a talented seamstress who DID sew many American flags and successfully ran her own business of doing piecework in the colonial/Revolutionary economy. The problem she had was that her instrument panel reading men was NOT at the same level as her needle talents and head for business, as she was taken advantage of by con men stealing the fruits of HER labor--definitely making THEM the lazy ones instead of the woman in the fabric arts! Still, this is soooo much worse, it breaks your heart for all those broken feet that also broke lives!

Many years ago, in Chinatown, I saw a very old woman who had this done. Her feet were completely unusable, she was held off the ground by two young women who supported her on both sides. It was very sad to see.

I switched worked shoes about a month or two ago and I've been having foot pain ever since. What I'm going through pales in comparison to what these women had to endure. I'm so glad that I wasn't born in that part of the world in those times. I'm grateful for all women that this is no longer practiced.

It was "helpful" in arranging marriages for young women at the time; the matchmakers and men understood that the face you have, that you are born with, is not something anyone can help. So instead of asking a father "How pretty is your daughter?" they would ask "How small are your daughter's feet?" It was a commitment to beauty and societal norms that could literally be measured. Even a girl with a plain or unattractive face could net a good marriage and prosperity for her family if she suffered enough, and her feet were tiny enough.
That the girls were quite literally suffering in agony for years seemed to make no difference to the families, of the marrying sons or of the poor girls. That they had been crippled so as to be physically incapable of running away from an abusive husband seems to have been a selling point for the men, though not mentioned.

I was thinking the same thing. The fact that they would be incapable of leaving if the marriage proved to be abusive, was probably one of the reasons, if not the major reason, that this horrible atrocity they called a "custom" was forced upon generations of these women.

Oh my GOD. I actually have mild cavus foot(where your foot has a bit of an arch to it), and I know you can have some pain by the time you’re an adult. Luckily I caught it relatively early, not soon enough to get rid of it, but enough to prevent pain.
And OH MY GOD i can’t even IMAGINE the pain these women have to go through with that high of an arch!!

Thank god it banned, but oml they obviously should’ve given them help, not treated them so bad afterwards!

The dumb thing about the shunning and banning is that for many of those women who had their feet bound it was too late for them to even reverse it and it wasn't even by choice most of the time- like that one woman said her family would beat her if she didn't bind them. I feel so sorry for them :(

I was always intrigued about this. I think the first time I heard about this practice was from it's reference in the classic novel, The Good Earth," by Pearl S. Buck. I was so mad that the guy in the story desired a woman of nobility who had her feet bound instead of his working class wife.

My Chinese parents always foot size-shamed me when I was a child, telling me I got a wart because my feet were too big, and that my grandmother's feet were smaller than mine, which I doubted the truth of considering she walked normally. Ironically in my Canadian middle school's math class I was an outlier in having the smallest shoe size in the class. This is how warped their expectations of what feet were "supposed" to look like were.

I actually found a pair of those little shoes in a junk shop in the 1980s, but at the time I didn't realise what they were, until I saw photos in my granddad's old book. They show very little sign of wear on the sole - not much walking possible I suppose.

Not a foot binding story, but similiar i suppose. My great grandmother as a kid 7 or 8 maybe, lived on a farm . Her father told her to stay out the back property cus it was where they dumped garbage. One day she was playing back there and stepped on a nail, out of fear for being punished she never told her father what happened. So her foot never grew since then and as an adult she had to have special shoes made with a block underneath to compensate for the size difference. She lived to be 99 years old with the foot of an 8 year old.

As a kid I meet someone who lost his toes in a lawnmowing accident - - you need toes to walk, run and to keep your balance. I don't see how a mother would be able to do that to their child.

I have deformed feed because of an illness. My feet hurt while walking longer distances. And thats with modern medical shoe. But my feet are not nearly as destroyed as there feed and i can't imagine the amount of pain that these people have to feel.
These people have my empathy.
