Who Can Say
The Horrors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I never meant for you to get hurt,
And how I tried,
Oh how I tried.

I could never give you just what you deserved,
Another man, would surely learn.

I know these words, they only serve to twist the knife,
But I'll try, to make them heard.
Maybe it's better now I've gone away,
Maybe it's not,
Oh, who can say.

And though it's hard, for me to say,
I know you're better off this way.

And when I told her I didn't love her anymore,
She cried.
And when I told her, her kisses were not like before,
She cried.
And when I told her another girl had caught my eye,
She cried.
And I kissed her, with a kiss that could only mean goodbye.

And though it's hard, for me to say,
Maybe you're better off this way.
And though it's hard, for me to say,
I know you're better off this way.

Get away
Get away
Get away
Get away

Get away
Get away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Horrors’ song “Who Can Say” tell a story of a broken relationship that has ended badly, leaving one person in pain while the other person struggles with whether they made the right decision. The opening lines, “I never meant for you to get hurt, and how I tried, oh how I tried,” show that the person who ended the relationship did not mean to cause any pain, but it was inevitable. The next line, “I could never give you just what you deserved, another man, would surely learn,” shows that the person who ended the relationship did not feel that they were capable of giving their partner what they needed and that someone else could make them happier.

The middle section of the song has a spoken-word style and recounts a conversation in which the person who ended the relationship tells their partner that they no longer love them and that they have found someone else. The partner cries, and the singer kisses them goodbye. The final lines of the song, “Maybe it’s better now I’ve gone away, maybe it’s not, oh, who can say,” show that the singer is not sure if the breakup was the right decision and that it is ultimately up to their ex-partner to decide if they are better off without them.

This is the kind of music I used to seek back in the mid- 80's. This is today's underground. People that say there is no good music today aren't digging hard enough.

I’m late but here’s my view. You say it’s the music you seemed for in the 80s which means this music is almost 30 years old already. That’s what we mean when we say there’s no good music anymore, there are no new genuine music that’s outstanding, what’s good happens to be old music only played by new artists. But nothing truly new.
