In My Dreams
The Hotknives Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A man came to me in my sleep, and told me I was dead.
I heard a shout, a girl cried out, and woke me in my bed.
And then I woke and she's not there.
It isn't right, it isn't fair.

No-one's hurt and no-one died.
No-one's poor or so it seemed.
You and I could be intimately dangerous.
I'll be with you, in my dreams.

Captured by a photograph, a moment lost in time.
Guilty of this thing I've done, and punished for my crime.
And when the jailor turns the key.
It isn't right, it wasn't me.

Cause no-one's hurt and no-one died.
And no-one's poor or so it seemed.
But you and I could be intimately dangerous.
I'll be with you, in my dreams.

They take back cool their bombs and guns, and put them all away.
One afternoon of silence, just to let the children play.
And when the ceasefire turns to war.
Another cause worth fighting for.

Cause no-one's hurt and no-one died.
And no-one's poor or so it seemed.
But you and I could be intimately dangerous.
I'll be with you, in my dreams.
No-one's hurt and no-one died.
No-one's poor or so it seemed.

You and I could be intimately dangerous.
I'll be with you, in my dreams.

Overall Meaning

The Hotknives's song, In My Dreams, depicts the blending of the dream world with reality. The lyrics show that the person is having a dream where a man comes to them and tells them that they are dead but they are then waking up in their bed to find out that it was just a dream. They feel like something is missing as the girl they love is not with them, and they believe that it's not right and fair. However, they still feel intimate with the girl, even though their physical presence is missing.

The song also touches on guilt and punishment. The person in the dream is guilty of something and punished for their crime, but it's unclear what the crime is. The lyrics bring up the idea that we all have something we're guilty of, whether it's big or small, and that we will be punished for it. We get caught and locked away in jail, both literally and metaphorically, and we don't feel like we deserve it at times.

The song also has a political commentary on war and violence. The lyrics state that, for a moment, the bombs and guns are put away, and there is an afternoon of silence for children to play. However, this ceasefire eventually turns to war, and there is always another cause worth fighting for. The song suggests that violence is never the answer and that we need to find better solutions to our problems.
