The thing is, it's not even true cruelty in the sense that he takes no pleasure in the act itself. He's doing this because he genuinely believes he's creating art and feels that moral considerations are an impediment. He's utterly indifferent to human suffering which makes him that much more haunting as a character.

If you observe suffering in the real world and are unfazed by it, you aren’t the norm, you are a sociopath. But I’ll grant it is seemingly rising in this world, the indifference to others, and therefor the number of sociopaths.

Aside from the red objects you associate with that Trump figure. On that note, I also find it amusing that you'd say you're not trying to get "political", yet you describe the red symbolism as a direct nod towards "Trump's" America. I think this is the one part of the film that was edited the most for an R-rating. I watched the unrated "Director's Cut" yesterday, and this was the scene that upset me the most. Don't get me wrong: This is actually one of Lars Von Trier's best and most accessible films, but this scene is emotionally punishing. Let's face it: Sometimes children are murdered, and parents are left to experience nothing but sheer horror, and we prefer not to think of such things. This film forces us to experience, however vicariously, the horror of a woman who had seen her children killed. However angry critics can be at Von Trier for portraying such a thing, it doesn't negate the fact that tragic things do happen. Von Trier's "cinema verite" style gives this scene shocking immediacy.

I bought the uncut version on dvd recently and that was my first time ever watching the movie, this cut seems so weird in comparison it feels like a disservice to the point and tone of the film. Theres no suspense in comparison, it's like watching a quick cut tv trailer for an october horror film.

The movie in general is but this particular scene was a little darker than the others simply due to the fact that you don’t normally see children brutally murdered in movies, let alone have their corpses mutilated

I haven’t laughed that hard in a movie in a long time. Possibly as a way to deflect my mind from the darkness, but his OCD stuff and the very authentic, genuine tone in his voice over insane things was hilarious.

The whole movie has a really odd comedic undertone to it. Everyone's acting kinda dumb in order for Jack to feel superior/inteligent. atleast i got that feeling when i watched it

Not at all the full picnic scene. I saw the unrated version at the cinema and I have a copy on DVD. this is the R-rated version.
Differences :
1. Director’s cut, you explicitly see both of the children being killed. The first one shot in the knee and through the head. The second child was shot in the head very explicitly.
2. After the killing of the children, the mother is sitting with her two murdered children on the floor and she’s being ordered to feed her children some pie. Meanwhile, the gaping shot wounds on both the children are shown
3. When the mother is killed, he puts them on a meadow with dead birds all around them, which makes the whole more gruesome.

Aniken Deluna Hi, I live in Spain but I’m Belgian. The DVD was released some weeks ago in Belgium and my brother got me a copy in OV with Dutch subtitles and sent it to me. In Belgium, movies are rarely R-rated, except when the movie contains extreme pornographic content, such as in Lars Von Triers “Nymphomaniac”. That one is only available in the R-rated version. “The house that Jack Built” unrated is currently available in multimedia stores all over Belgium. ✌🏼

This film and AntiChrist I think are Lars Von Trier's best work. They're both so raw, I love it. This film in particular is almost a throwback to the black comedy American Psycho, but 10x more gruesome.

This isn't the full scene. And he doesn't have a reason for killing these people. This movie is supposed to take place in a super nihilistic world. There is no hope, there is no happiness, there is no success. Only sadistic, rage filled hatred. It's super morbid, but it is what it is!

You cant cut the poetry between and expect it to be good. To just show the parts that hard shocking and gory levels this movie down to the likes of Hostel or SAW. Its just gore for gores sake. Trier isn't some Tarantino or Rob Zombie, he's amongst the like of Andrei Tarkovsky. Poets with a camera. This is a butchering of his work.

Do not watch the uncut version. It is grisly and super violent. It shows the boy's leg being shot off, the other boy's head being shot extremely graphically, and then the mother has to feed her dead kids. It is vicious and an awful scene.

This movie starts off fun and then gets progressively more boring. By the time I wanted the movie to be over, there was still 40 minutes left or more.
The violence is partially censored and the story is superficial, there's no reason this should be a 2.5h movie, but it is and it is to the detriment of the movie.
