The band split in 1988.

The band often referred to themselves as "the 4th best band in Hull," referring to Kingston upon Hull, the city in England where the band formed in 1983. (The three bands that were "better" were Red Guitars, Everything but the Girl, and The Gargoyles.)

In 1986, the band broke through with the single Happy Hour, which reached No. 3 in the UK charts helped by a claymation animated pop promo of a type that was in vogue at the time. At the end of the same year, they had a No. 1 single with a cover version of Isley Jasper Isley's Caravan of Love.

The band released three albums: London 0 Hull 4, The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death, and the greatest bits compilation Now That's What I Call Quite Good. A new collection, Best of the Housemartins, was released in 2004, and was available in a expanded edition with a DVD collecting their music video clips.

The Housemartins lyrics were an odd mixture of Marxist politics and born-again Christianity, reflecting Paul Heaton's beliefs at the time.

The band split in 1988, but the members have since remained friends and worked on each other's projects. Norman Cook has enjoyed significant success with both Beats International and then as Fatboy Slim, while Heaton, Hemingway and roadie Sean Welch formed The Beautiful South. Stan Cullimore has become an author of children's books. Despite repeated requests from fans, they have never reformed.

In 1993, former drummer Hugh Whitaker was convicted of assault after attacking his business partner James Hewitt with an axe. Whitaker was subsequently released from prison and now resides in Leeds, where he occasionally drums with local band Percy. Whitaker is also a member of The Malkies fronted by Alistair Hulett.

Me and my best mate were a bit stoned one night flicking through music channels (must have been around 2009) this comes on and we were in tears of laughter, it became our anthem and we used to sing it whilst trying to also do the harmonising. This song just struck my head this morning. Have neither heard it or thought of it for decades. Must be the lyrics reaching out to the time we're living in. I never had the single or anything of Housemartins and back then I wouldn't care much, but you couldn't avoid hearing Caravan Of Love daily in 1986. A timeless song of it's time and one of the really nice tunes from the 80's. I think I'll bring it in to the jam-sett, and make it a reggae.

Unforgettable, in the late 80es this marked the end of the night in my alternative club, we played a selection of goth, psych, new wave classics to an audience of goths, psychobilly and wavers. Fantastic times and jolly good music. I'm an elder, I know, but we had great fun.

@Steve O'Hare dear god get a life. It was just a fun comment. OF COURSE I have more meaningful moments in my life. Surviving a life threatening illness and coming home to my two babies stands out, along with marrying my best friend and celebrating our 20th anniversary this year. But I enjoy this song and made a fun comment. You my friend need to lighten up.

Your life must be pretty bland and the other comments about your comment like Can it get any better than this! is Sad, I am 55 now and I can pick 1 moment in my life of thousands of moments that are better than this song with an obvious agenda to it ( And No I am not anti-Religious),,,, I left home at 14 and in my very first travels around Australia I found myself in the middle of the Country in the desert for a few nights as I was Hitch Hiking around my country, Laying in my Camp 1000 meters from the Hyway at a distance of at least 400km from any tiny town in any direction laying on my back on my swag looking up at the night sky that was so full of stars that the stars reached the ground all around me on every horizon (The Milky Way in the Desert is an amazing thing to see), the feeling was like being in a Real Snow Globe But with Trillions of Stars instead of snow AND it was so quiet it hurt my ears to the extent it felt like they were ready to explode, It was then at the great old age of 14 I had found out that total silence is the loudest thing one will ever hear. Those 4 nights alone in the desert out of hundreds of other moments in my life with some being equally beautiful and thousand times more beautiful and amazing than this song, The Birth of my 5 Daughters also are each a million times more amazing. Dig deeper people into your memories I am sure you will all find that the song is OK-ish in comparison to most moments in your lives. If Not then everyone in this comment thread has so far lead Sad Dull lives.

Well, that's encouraging !
You should introduce her to other vocal styles, choral singing ect. Old religious stuff (I'm atheist, but I like choirs).
Mozart's Requiem Mass is quite good, until about the 5th movement. Some music historians believe his student completed the work, there is a definite change around 5 verses in, I usually only listen till that point.
