Friedman was once a member of the indie rock outfit The Boggs. In November 2007, following a US tour supporting The Boggs’ third album Forts, Jason Friedman and touring member Eleanore Everdell found themselves in the studio recording a brand new collaborative track without the rest of the band. Friedman said: "In the past, the collaborators I worked with would adjust what they did to fit my vision. Working with Eleanore it was clear that the time had come to shift into a more equal partnership.” In the 10 months since that session, the seven-year-old The Boggs were laid to rest, and The Hundred in the Hands were formed.
The first song completed was "Dressed in Dresden." In March 2009 the band released the single Dressed in Dresden / Undressed in Dresden on Pure Groove label. The online success of this song led in August 2009 to a deal with Warp Records, which Friedman calls "near the top of my list of ideal labels." Warp issued the 12-inch single Dressed in Dresden in 5 April 2009.
Eleanore Everdell also sang on "Lover’s Day" from TV on the Radio’s Dear Science.
THITH released in 18 May 2010 their first 6-track EP This Desert, followed by the singles Pigeons in 13 September 2010 and Commotion / Aggravation in 15 November 2010. The song "Pigeons" supported by an original music video, became their most popular song. In 20 September 2010 they released the debut album The Hundred in the Hands.
The Hundred in the Hands are inspired by artists like Young Marble Giants, Wire, New Order, The Cure, De La Soul, Buddy Holly, Broadcast, LCD Soundsystem and many others.
The duo's second studio album, Red Night, was released on 11 June 2012.

The Hundred in the Hands Lyrics

In the middle of the night,
I build it for you
I build it for you.
Outside,
In the middle of the night,
Things fall apart,
I′ll build it for you
I'll build it for you.
I move below
My city grows and unwinds
I cut the tunnels
I ride the trains
Into the night.

I′ll build it for you

I'll build it for you
I move below
My city grows
And unwinds
I cut the tunnels
I ride the trains into
The night.
Outside,
In the middle of the night,
We find our shirts far too thin
For the end of summer.
Outsideinthemidddddleofthenight
I build it for you I build it for you
Outsideinthemidddddleofthenight
Things fall apart we could start again.
I build it for you, I build it for you.
The song "Tunnels" by The Hundred in the Hands is a melancholic yet hopeful ballad about rebuilding and starting over. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of someone working hard in the middle of the night to construct something for a loved one. The repetition of "I'll build it for you" emphasizes the dedication and commitment of the singer. The mention of "cutting tunnels" and "riding trains" creates a sense of movement and progress, as if the singer is carving a path through the darkness to reach their destination. However, there is also a sense of uncertainty and danger, with references to things falling apart and potential danger from "kid cults wired" who could "steal it all" or "end it all". The line "we find our shirts far too thin for the end of summer" adds to the feeling of vulnerability and the passage of time.
Overall, the song seems to be about the power of determination and hard work to overcome obstacles and create something meaningful. The singer is willing to risk everything to build something for their loved one, even in the face of potential danger and uncertainty. The hopeful tone of the chorus suggests that even when things fall apart, there is always the possibility of starting again.
