Cant Satisfy
The Impressions Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know I can't satisfy your love
I can't satisfy
You see I can't satisfy your love
I can't satisfy

I found out in time
What was on your mind
You never meant to stay
Did without me anyway

One of the chosen few
Did what you told me to
All you ever did was lie
I can't satisfy

So I can't satisfy your love
I can't satisfy

You seem so complete
So pretty and sweet
But never knew I'd know
Just which way you're going to

Sometimes I wonder why
Why do you make me cry
Why do the love inside
Swallows up all of my pride

And I can't satisfy your love
I can't satisfy
And I can't satisfy your love
I can't satisfy

You seem so complete
So pretty and sweet
But never knew I'd know
Just which way you're going to

Sometimes I wonder why
Why do you make me cry
Why do the love inside
Swallows all of my pride

And I can't satisfy your love
I can't satisfy
I can't satisfy your love
I can't satisfy

One of the chosen few
Did what you told me to
All you ever did was lie
I can't satisfy

And I can't satisfy your love
I can't satisfy
I can't satisfy your love
I can't satisfy

And I can't satisfy your love

Overall Meaning

The Impressions' song "Can't Satisfy" is all about the singer's inability to meet the needs and desires of their lover. The lyrics are filled with frustration as the singer acknowledges their limitations and the fact that they are not enough for their partner. The song is an emotional plea for understanding and acceptance, but also a painful recognition of the gap between two people.

The first verse sets the tone for the rest of the song, with the singer repeating the phrase "I can't satisfy your love" over and over. They are admitting defeat, acknowledging that they cannot provide what their lover needs. The second verse adds more detail, revealing that the singer has discovered their partner was not committed to the relationship from the beginning. This knowledge adds to the singer's feelings of inadequacy and makes them wonder why their lover stays with them even though they cannot fulfill their needs.

The chorus repeats the central theme of the song, emphasizing the pain of not being enough for someone. The third verse adds a layer of complexity, as the singer describes their lover as "complete" and "pretty and sweet," yet still unable to be satisfied. This creates a sense of hopelessness as it seems that nothing the singer could do would ever be enough.

As a whole, "Can't Satisfy" is a poignant exploration of the insecurities and difficulties of relationships. It captures the frustration of wanting to be enough for someone, but feeling powerless in the face of their needs and desires.

@Chris Lalor I think they settled out of court. On the single version I have, it has Curtis as writer, on the Best of lp released a bit later, it has the same but with Jobete as the publisher. More recently everyone comes clean and HDH take the credits

They actually got taken to court by Berry Gordy for plagiarism.
