If you watch him closely, that smooth criminal is actively managing that cable at all times like the legend he is. He knows he is going to be moving side-to-side in front of the other mic stands, and if you watch closely, he hand maneuvers the cable so it's always laying in a straight line in the direction he's moving in, taking up slack, rather than pulling the cable behind him, which is what causes problems. Clearly he's practiced dancing with a mic cable.

I love Michael's 1970s moves. They have a different flavour than what came later

Because his moves represented the era and times he was in, in this case it being the disco era. It was a sign of the times type of thing.
