Burning Sky
The Jam Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How are things in your little world?
I hope they're going well, and you are too
Do you still see the same old crowd?
The ones who used to meet every Friday
I'm really sorry that I can't be there
But work comes first, I'm sure you'll understand
Things are really taking off for me
Business is thriving, and I'm showing a profit

And in any case it wouldn't be the same
'Cause we've all grown up, and we've got our lives
And the values that we had once upon a time
Seem stupid now, 'cause the rent must be paid
And some bonds severed, and others made

Now I don't want you to get me wrong
Ideals are fine when you are young
And I must admit we had a laugh
But that's all it was and ever will be

'Cause the burning sky keeps burning bright
And as long as it does (and it always will)
There's no time for dreams when commerce calls
And the taxman's shouting, 'cause he wants his dough
And the wheels of finance won't begin to slow

And it's only us realists who are gonna come through
'Cause there's only one power higher than that of truth
And that's the burning sky

Oh and by the way I must tell you
Before I sign off, that I've got a meeting next week
With the head of a big corporate
I can't disclose who, but I'm sure you'll know it

And the burning sky keeps burning bright
And it won't turn off till it's had enough
It's the greedy bastard who won't give up
And you're just a dreamer if you don't realize
And the sooner you do will be the better for you
Then we'll all be happy, and we'll all be wise
And all bow down to the burning sky

Then we'll all be happy, and we'll all be wise
And together we will live beneath the burning sky

Overall Meaning

The Jam's "Burning Sky" reflects on the growth and progression of individuals, and how that translates into changes in values and priorities. The song opens with a polite inquiry into the lives of old friends, questioning whether they still interact with the same group of people they used to meet with every Friday. The singer then apologizes for being unable to attend such meetings, explaining that work has taken precedence, as it is prospering and turning a profit.

The second verse of the song delves into the shift in values that adults experience as they enter the workforce and face financial obligations like rent payments and taxes. The singer argues that while they once held onto idealistic notions and laughed with their friends, the responsibilities of adulthood have forced them to become "realists." The song concludes by reiterating that the "burning sky," a metaphor for the demands of the business world, will continue to burn bright and that only the realistic people will succeed.

The song's lyrics illustrate the tension between maintaining idealistic values and practical, profitable choices. The singer's explanation of the importance of work and the need to prioritize profits reflects the reality of the modern business world, where success is often measured financially. The song's tone is critical of those who cling to outdated ideals and dreams without recognizing the practical necessities of modern life.

Setting Sons and Sound Affects are two of the greatest albums ever made - by anyone!

Something Else

Yeah i loved settings sons
Paul hated it saying its a studio album

chokkan7

It's still amazing to think that Weller and company conceived and executed this prescient work in their early twenties, but so sad that the world it predicted has largely come into existence. Makes me wish I were 19 again...

BoxMeister

They never predicted anything, just describing what went on. We are just stuck in a loop, like their song 'Running on the Spot'

clevelandleader

Some of the best lyrics ever.

Brent Carter

Agree. Just brilliant stuff by Paul. This may be the best Jam song of them all.

melanie adams

there is not 1 bad song on this album!!!!

Stephen McQueen

this song is about how real friendship takes a backseat to self interest...how true, l got this album when i was 12, l'm now 44 and this song hits the nail on the head.

Hale Bopp

This and 'Sound Affects' two of the most "rounded" brilliant albums.

P M

Oh man you forget how good these guys were, great band.
