The band drew upon a variety of stylistic influences over the course of their career, including 1960s beat music, soul, rhythm and blues and psychedelic rock, as well as 1970s punk and new wave. The trio was known for its melodic pop songs, its distinctly English flavour and its mod image. The band launched the career of Paul Weller, who went on to form The Style Council and later had a successful solo career. Weller wrote and sang most of The Jamās original compositions, and he played lead guitar, using a Rickenbacker. Bruce Foxton provided backing vocals and prominent basslines, which were the foundation of many of the bandās songs, including the hits "Down in the Tube Station at Midnight", "The Eton Rifles", "Going Underground" and "Town Called Malice".

When he gets you home
Coming up short, making all them excuses, well
You're better off alone
Think he's fire 'cause he drive a six hundred that
He don't even own
Talkin' like he's the guy
He could 'bout have any girl he want
He don't know nothin' bout it
'Bout time you found a man
He just behavin' around it
Girl, he don't understand
What you go through
He ain't got a clue
What love really means to you
He don't know nothin' bout it
He don't know nothin' bout it
Talkin' bout all of those things he's goin' buy for you
Can't even get a loan
Runnin' round town frontin' like he take good care of you
But everybody knows (everybody knows)
How can a guy think he fly
When he's still living at his momma's home
Say goodnight, ain't it time
Think it's only right that you let him go
He don't know nothin' bout it
Bout time you found a man
He just behavin' around it
Girl he don't understand
What you go through
He ain't got a clue
What love really means to you
He don't know nothin' bout it
He don't know nothin' bout it, yeah
You need a man to be strong
That will always be there
Whenever you need him
You shouldn't have to call him
A man who will be, be right there when you fall (when you fall)
If you put your heart in his hands
Then he needs to be your friend
A friend who will listen (oh, baby, yeah)
To all of your needs (all of your needs, yes)
If for no other reason but to love, and to trust
And to be your everything
Something that every woman needs
Ooh yeah, oh
He don't know nothin' bout it, nothin' bout it, baby, oh yeah
No, say it now
He don't know nothin' bout it
Not a damn, baby
No he don't, no he don't, no he don't
He just be hangin' around it, yeah
Oh baby, can't you see what you need?
You need a man (you need a man) to be strong
That will always be there (oh, baby)
Whenever you need him (whenever you need him)
You shouldn't have to call him (you shouldn't have to call)
A man who will be (who will be)
Be right there (be right there)
When you fall (when you fall)
You put your heart in his hands (oh, in his hands)
Then he needs to be your friend
A friend who will listen (oh, a friend who will listen)
To all of your needs (every one of your needs)
If for no other reason but to love, and to trust
And to be your everything
Something that every woman needs
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ah
Baby, baby, baby, baby
Get him off your mind
Get him off your head
Get him out your soul
Get him out your bed
He don't know nothin' bout it
Ah, yes, ah
Yes, ah, look around
See what you got
Don't you know
He don't know nothing
See he don't know nothing
He don't know a thing, yeah, yeah, ooh
He don't know nothin' bout it, yeah
The Jam's song "Don't Know Nothin' About It" speaks about a young man who brags about all of the things he'll do to a girl he wants to impress. The singer tells the girl that she needs a man who is strong and always there for her. She is better off alone then with the young man, who is clueless about love and the needs of a woman. The song is a strong message of female empowerment and encourages girls to find true love with a man who is more than a pretty face or a fancy car.
The lyrics express frustration with the materialistic values that are introduced to love and relationships. The singer emphasizes that a true relationship is built on trust, friendship, and love. The young man in the song only cares about the things he can buy for the girl, rather than being her true friend and confidante. The girl is better off without him, and the song encourages her to find a man who truly understands her.
The song is a great addition to the list of anti-love materialism songs in the 80s. It has a strong message that encourages listeners to prioritize genuine love and relationships, rather than being blinded by material possessions. Overall, the Jam's "Don't Know Nothin' About It" is a powerful anthem for female empowerment and love with a message that still resonates today.
