It's Too Bad
The Jam Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All we seem to do is talk about it
We always end up shouting about it
There was a time we could overcome it
But it's too late to say we'll just forget it
It's too bad that we had to break up
And too much said for us to every make up
I could get by if I could just forget you
But things remind me and I feel so sad now

I could say I'm sorry
But it's not the point is it?
You want to play your games and
You don't mind if I get hurt

Same old feeling every time I see you
And every avenue I walk I'm behind you

Your back is turned and your eyes are closed girl
You move in circles that are out of my reach now

Overall Meaning

The Jam's It's Too Bad is an emotionally charged song that talks about the aftermath of a relationship that has ended but the two people involved still have unresolved feelings. The lyrics suggest that the couple keeps talking about what went wrong all the time, but it just results in them shouting at each other. There was a time when they could have worked things out, but it's too late now, and they cannot just forget everything and move on. The chorus of the song talks about the regret of the breakup and how much was said between them, making it impossible to reconcile. The singer is struggling to move on, and even though he could get by if he could forget, it's hard to do so because things keep reminding him of his past.

The verses of the song point towards one person in the relationship constantly playing mind games and not caring about the feelings of the other person. The singer can't help but feel hurt every time he sees his ex-girlfriend, and every step he takes seems to lead him to her. The lyrics suggest that the person has moved on and is out of his reach now, leaving him with a deep sense of sadness and regret.

The Jam had such a great distinctive sound. I remember seeing a town called malice in the early days of mtv and how cool it seemed. Mod Pizza Radio plays the Jam pretty frequently.

GARY CLINTON MILLER

@John Allison Paul was aware that he didn’t want to end up like The Rolling Stones, singing Jumping Jack Flash for, like, the millionth time. Rick and Bruce were gutted but they finished at the top!!! It’s like George Best playing iat the end for Fulham when he was once, Europion Footballer of the Year. I saw The Jam 6 times in the 80s and will never forget the feelings.
