Got My Mojo Working
The James Cotton Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Got my mojo working, but it just won't work on you
Got my mojo working, but it just won't work on you
I wanna love you so bad till I don't know what to do

Got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
Got my mojo working, but it just won't work on you

I'm going down to Louisiana to get me a mojo hand
I'm going down to Louisiana to get me a mojo hand
I'm gonna have all you women right here at my command

Got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
Got my mojo working, but it just won't work on you

I got a gypsy woman giving me advice
I got a gypsy woman giving me advice
She got some red hot tips I'm keepin' them on ice.

Got my mojo working
Got my mojo working
Got my mojo working

Got my mojo working
Got my mojo working, but it just won't work on you

Overall Meaning

The James Cotton Band's song "Got My Mojo Working" is a classic blues track that speaks of the frustration of trying to win someone's love. The recurring refrain, "Got my mojo working, but it just won't work on you," is a desperate admission of defeat. The singer feels that he has everything he needs to win over the person he loves, but for some reason, it's not enough. He is willing to go to great lengths to make this person love him, even if it means seeking out a powerful magic charm known as a mojo hand from Louisiana.

The song also references a gypsy woman who is giving the singer advice. It's unclear exactly what advice she's giving him, but he seems to think it's valuable information that could help him win his love interest over. He's keeping her tips "on ice," indicating that he plans to use them later. Overall, the song is a classic example of the blues genre, with its themes of heartache and desperation. Despite the singer's efforts, he is unable to win the love of the person he desires, leaving him feeling defeated.

@SamPaiKenpo

Muddy recorded many versions of this song, but there is something special about this version. It must be the white socks!! James Cotton is on fire and the whole band is outstanding.

God ! what power! I saw this line up @ NYC's Cafe au GoGo in '66. I was 19 a fan, but the first time I saw them live. This video shows the band at their best. That short time frame of 65-69 when a blues revival was going on was great I was able to see most of my heros from the Chicago scene;could'nt ask for a better education.
