After a brief run as a recording-only project based in Austin, founding vocalist David Yow, bassist David Wm. Sims and guitarist Duane Denison relocated to Chicago, Illinois in 1989, finding kindred spirits in recording engineer Steve Albini and the Touch and Go Records imprint. With the addition of drummer Mac McNeilly, they began operating as a live band, expanding their following beyond Chicago's alternative scene into an international audience. Drummer Jim Kimball replaced McNeilly late in 1996, and was himself replaced by Brendan Murphy two years later.
Despite releasing a split single with leading alt-rockers Nirvana and signing to Capitol Records, the band failed to find commercial success amid the alternative rock explosion of the 1990s, and disbanded in 1999. Their reunion from 2008 to 2010 and following tour enjoyed positive responses from audiences and critics.
In October 2013, The Jesus Lizard were set to play at the All Tomorrow's Parties event Release the Bats in Melbourne, Australia. They cancelled this show due to "unforeseen circumstances."

Like at the wheel waitin' (way down), I don't know why
I'm gonna find desire, I don't know why
Some people feel sorrow, I don't know why
You can the ?? (barrells) of my mind
Some people feel sorrow (to sit alone), I don't know why
But I cannot feel waitin' (way down), I don't know why
I'm gonna find desire, I don't know why
You can the ?? (barrells) of my mind
Don't even say you think you're too complicated
You know I don't like to beat around the bush
Well now that you know, I want you to be my gal
Waited such a long time just to ask you
You know I don't like a justa hangin' around
Well now that you know, I want you to be my gal
Ah well I mean, but ah, but ah, you know
Waited such a long time just to ask you
You know I don't like a justa beatin' around
Well now that you know, I want you to be my gal
Some people feel sorrow, I don't know why
Like at the wheel waitin' (way down), I don't know why
I'm gonna find desire, I don't know why
Like at the wheel waitin' (way down), I don't know why
You can the ?? (barrells) of my mind
The Jesus Lizard's "Chrome" is a song that is difficult to decipher when it comes to its lyrics. The lyrics are repetitive, but that is what makes it catchier as well. It starts off saying that some people feel desire and sorrow, but the singer doesn't know why. He talks about being at the wheel waiting and wanting to find desire. The repetition of this phrase emphasizes the waiting and the longing.
The second part of the song changes tones completely. The singer switches to addressing someone directly and talks about how he waited a long time to ask her to be his gal. He doesn't like beating around the bush and doesn't like just hanging around. The repetition of the phrase "Well now that you know, I want you to be my gal" emphasizes the urgency and the straightforwardness of the singer.
The song then goes back to repeating the earlier lines of not knowing why some people feel sorrow and desire while at the wheel waiting. The ambiguous lyrics can be interpreted in various ways, and the repetition makes it open to personal interpretation. Overall, the song portrays the feeling of waiting, longing, and desire.
