After a brief run as a recording-only project based in Austin, founding vocalist David Yow, bassist David Wm. Sims and guitarist Duane Denison relocated to Chicago, Illinois in 1989, finding kindred spirits in recording engineer Steve Albini and the Touch and Go Records imprint. With the addition of drummer Mac McNeilly, they began operating as a live band, expanding their following beyond Chicago's alternative scene into an international audience. Drummer Jim Kimball replaced McNeilly late in 1996, and was himself replaced by Brendan Murphy two years later.
Despite releasing a split single with leading alt-rockers Nirvana and signing to Capitol Records, the band failed to find commercial success amid the alternative rock explosion of the 1990s, and disbanded in 1999. Their reunion from 2008 to 2010 and following tour enjoyed positive responses from audiences and critics.
In October 2013, The Jesus Lizard were set to play at the All Tomorrow's Parties event Release the Bats in Melbourne, Australia. They cancelled this show due to "unforeseen circumstances."

Destroy Before Reading
The Jesus Lizard Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Like a satellite
Tight...tight...tight
Norelco proctor silex
Hamilton beach
Cook up some loving for ya baby
Electric blanket
Keep the toes and the nose warm
Tight...tight...tight
I found my paddle
I found my paddle around
Midnight
I found my paddle
I found my paddle around
Midnight
Cry baby show off
Makes good...so proud
Mingus and Parker fuck for breakfast
Cause jazz is a slut again
I'd soak a towel
Like a satellite
Tight...tight...tight
I found my paddle
I found my paddle around
Midnight
I found my paddle
I found my paddle around
Midnight
Do one
Etc...
The Jesus Lizard's song "Destroy Before Reading" is a difficult one to interpret, as the lyrics seem somewhat disjointed and random at first glance. However, upon closer inspection, one can discern some possible meanings and themes. The opening lines, "I'd soak a towel like a satellite, tight...tight...tight," create a somewhat surreal image that could relate to the feeling of being trapped or stuck in a situation. The references to household appliances like Norelco, Proctor Silex, and Hamilton Beach could be interpreted as a commentary on consumerism and the idea that we are defined by the things we own.
The next section, beginning with "Cook up some loving for ya baby, electric blanket, keep the toes and the nose warm," seems to be a more straightforward reference to domesticity and comfort. The repetition of the "tight" line from the opening verse also emphasizes the idea of being tightly controlled or constrained in some way. The section that follows, which references jazz musicians Mingus and Parker and the idea of jazz being a "slut," could be interpreted as a commentary on artistic freedom and the idea that creative expression should not be bound by traditional norms or expectations.
The repetition of the lines "I found my paddle, I found my paddle around midnight" serves as a sort of refrain throughout the song. This could represent a moment of empowerment or liberation, as the singer has found their way out of a difficult situation. The final line, "Do one, etc..." could be interpreted as a challenge to the listener to take action and create change in their own lives.
