After a brief run as a recording-only project based in Austin, founding vocalist David Yow, bassist David Wm. Sims and guitarist Duane Denison relocated to Chicago, Illinois in 1989, finding kindred spirits in recording engineer Steve Albini and the Touch and Go Records imprint. With the addition of drummer Mac McNeilly, they began operating as a live band, expanding their following beyond Chicago's alternative scene into an international audience. Drummer Jim Kimball replaced McNeilly late in 1996, and was himself replaced by Brendan Murphy two years later.
Despite releasing a split single with leading alt-rockers Nirvana and signing to Capitol Records, the band failed to find commercial success amid the alternative rock explosion of the 1990s, and disbanded in 1999. Their reunion from 2008 to 2010 and following tour enjoyed positive responses from audiences and critics.
In October 2013, The Jesus Lizard were set to play at the All Tomorrow's Parties event Release the Bats in Melbourne, Australia. They cancelled this show due to "unforeseen circumstances."

Peculiar to this girl, peculiar to the world,
she wants to watch a fella get along
?? (It kept) my pack, I take a bad rap,
I can't hear my other way (throw my other weight) around
I take a good nap, I call her up now,
I taught that girl see, everythnig I know, hey
My baby tell me, my baby tell me, my baby girl, an Indiana girl
? (fuck) now, I tell her ?? (doc date) her here
My folks don't realize, about the little girl,
or so we know (don't), just to make her smile
I say we got now, to ?? (up a clog) now,
I taught that girl everythngi I know, hey
My baby spank me, my baby thank a me, my baby hit me, like I've never been
My baby tell me, my baby tell me, my baby girl, an Indiana girl
I say ??(ya frighten) me, don't ever fight me,
I taught that girl everythnig I know
Yeah, everything I know, yeah,
everything I know, yeah, everythnig I know how, huh
huh, huh, huh, huh, huh, huh, duh, duh
The Jesus Lizard's song "Pop Song" is a complex and cryptic exploration of a relationship between the singer and his lover. The lyrics are filled with abstract and sometimes nonsensical phrases that are open to interpretation. The opening lines of the song suggest that the singer's lover is taking him to places he has never been before. The phrase "peculiar to this girl, peculiar to the world" implies that his relationship with her is unique and special, perhaps even otherworldly. He adds that she wants to watch a man "get along," which could mean that she enjoys watching him thrive or succeed in life.
As the song progresses, the lyrics become more convoluted and difficult to decipher. There are mentions of taking a "bad rap" and "throwing my other weight around," which could refer to struggles with authority or power dynamics in the relationship. There are also assertions that the singer has taught his lover everything he knows and that they have a secret relationship that his family doesn't know about. The chorus repeats the phrase "my baby tell me, my baby tell me" several times, suggesting that the singer is seeking guidance or validation from his lover.
Overall, "Pop Song" is a lyrically dense and enigmatic track that leaves much to the interpretation of the listener.
