Psychocandy
The Jesus and Mary Chain Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The wind is screaming around the trees for my psycho candy
The world is spread a strange disease from my
Psycho candy
Candy is the baddest seed
She'll take you down and make you eat
Her fish
Her poison fish
Is on your dish

(now now now now)
(now now now now)

Candy cannot hear or see
She's in the place she needs to be
She'll take the point to a sharpened blade
And give you something warm to taste

And her world is turning 'round
And on and on and on
And her world is turning 'round
And on and on and on
And her world is turning 'round
And on and on and on
And her world is turning 'round
And on and on and on
And her world is turning 'round
And on and on and on
(psycho candy)
And her world is turning 'round
And on and on and on
(psycho candy)
And her world is turning 'round
And on and on and on
(psycho candy)
And her world is turning 'round
And on and on and on
(she's my psycho candy)
And her world is turning 'round
And on and on and on
(she's my psycho candy)
And her world is turning 'round
And on and on and on
(psycho candy)
And her world is turning 'round

And on and on and on
(psycho)

Overall Meaning

The Jesus and Mary Chain's song Psychocandy is a dark and brooding depiction of addiction and its consequences. The "wind" and "world" described in the lyrics are the destructive forces that surround the singer, who is addicted to a substance referred to as "Psycho candy." The candy is "the baddest seed," and its consumption leads to the eating of "her poison fish," which can be interpreted as a metaphor for the harmful effects of addiction.

The song's lyrics suggest that the addicted protagonist is aware of the dangers of their addiction but unable to escape the pleasure it provides. Candy, the substance that the singer is addicted to, is described as being in control, with a power that cannot be fought against. The line "She's in the place she needs to be" reinforces the notion that the singer is a slave to their addiction and cannot escape it.

The repetition of the phrase "And her world is turning 'round" adds to the feeling of inevitability of the singer's addiction. The phrase is almost hypnotic, drawing the listener further into the dark world of addiction and its consequences.

@gil-nammoon3738

what is good, lasts for eternity.

teens will still be "discovering"
this album in 2070,

and still be blown totally away.

@destroyrebuild

I'm 35 and just discovered them touring with NIN. Now I have to buy this and other albums.

@williamraworth1161

16 or 17 moshing on the dance floor (well more like rooted to the spot playing the air guitar actually) pissed with my mates (on a few cans of special brew or tennants super)...great days. My parents were worried and said I was depressed....just young and like my rock music...along with the mission, cult, fields of the nephlim, cure, sisters of mercy...blessed to have lived through this period of music

@gmcg923

I was 14 in 1985. One of my friends put this on, and I had never heard anything like this. I blew my fucking mind. Even almost 30 years later, this still has a sound of it's own. I'm glad I was there to experience this.

@javiermatos9529

I was 8 that year. Went to a friend's house to make school work. Suddenly, this album was played ( his older brother was literally blasting it ).... I was mesmerized, kind of... said good bye to kids silly music, 4ver 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@justlikehoney1859
