Honey Hush
The Johnny Burnette Trio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, come in this house, stop all that yakety-yak
Come in this house, stop all that yakety-yak
'Cause your sugar daddy don't want no talkin' back
You keep on a-tellin', talking 'bout this and that
You keep on a-talkin', talking 'bout this and that
I got news for you, you ain't nothing but an alleycat

Turn off the waterworks baby, they don't move me no-more
Turn off the waterworks baby, they don't move me no-more
When I leave this time, I ain't com' back no-more
Honey hush! Oow!

I said come in this house, stop all that yakety-yak
Come on in this house woman, stop all that yakety-yak
Don't make me nervous, I'm holdin' a baseball bat
Well it's a hi-ho, hi-ho silver
A hi-ho, a hi-ho silver, hi-ho, a hi-ho silver

Hi-ho, hi-ho silver
Hi-ho, hi-ho silver away

Overall Meaning

The Johnny Burnette Trio's "Honey Hush" is a playful and humorous song about a man who wants his partner to stop talking so much. The first verse sets the scene, with the man telling his partner to come into the house and stop talking so much because her "sugar daddy" doesn't want any talking back. The second verse continues with the man telling his partner that he's tired of her constant chatter, and that he has news for her: she's nothing but an "alleycat."

The chorus, with the repeated phrase "honey hush," is the man's way of telling his partner to be quiet. He tells her to turn off the waterworks, as her crying and emotional outbursts no longer affect him. In fact, he's had enough and declares that he won't be coming back after this time.

The bridge of the song, with the repeated phrase "hi-ho silver," adds to the playful nature of the song. It's a reference to the Lone Ranger's catchphrase, which adds to the machismo of the man and the playful, tongue-in-cheek nature of the song.

Overall, the song can be seen as a commentary on gender roles and power dynamics in relationships. The man wants his partner to be quiet and obedient, and he uses his physical strength (with the baseball bat) to intimidate her. However, the playful nature of the song and the exaggerated language suggest that it's not meant to be taken too seriously, and is more of a lighthearted commentary on the push-pull dynamics of relationships.

@tallpaul881

@suegunn2532

Grady Martin is/was an absolute genius in this recording. This trio does the best rendition ever. If you don't like it......you don't deserve to hear it. I have been a rock and roller since 1953 and I am 76 now. I can't stop listening to this song.........If I weren't going to have them play "Wake up a little Susie" at my funeral, this recording would be my next choice.......are you listening kids?
