The Fish of the Sea
The Jolly Rogers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'll sing you a song of the
Fish in the sea! And it's
Windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys
When the wind blows, we're all together, boys
Blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds, blow
Jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes!
Up jumps the eel with his slippery tail
He climbs up aloft as he reefs the topsail!
Then up jumps the shark with
His nine rows of teeth
Saying, "You eat the dough boys
And I'll eat the beef!" And it's
Windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys
When the wind blows, we're all together, boys
Blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds, blow
Jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes!
Up jumps the cod with his chuckle head
He runs out up forward and
Throws out the lead!
The up jumps the herring, the king of the sea
Saying, "All other fishes
Now you follow me!" And it's
Windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys
When the wind blows, we're all together, boys
Blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds, blow
Jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes!
Up jumps the whale, the largest of all
"If you want any wind, well
I'll blow ye a squall"
Then up jumps the fisherman
Stalwart and grim and with his big net
He scoops them all in! And it's
Windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys
When the wind blows, we're all together, boys
Blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds, blow
Jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes!
Windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys
When the wind blows, we're all together, boys
Blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds, blow
Jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes!
"The Fish of the Sea" by The Jolly Rogers is a lively sea shanty that tells the story of various fish in the sea and their interactions with the sailors. The song starts with an invitation to all the young sailor men to listen and learn about the fish in the sea. The chorus, "Windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys / When the wind blows, we're all together, boys / Blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds, blow / Jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes!" sets the tone of camaraderie and perseverance in the face of challenging weather conditions.
As the song progresses, each verse introduces a different fish and their unique characteristics. The eel is described as agile, climbing aloft and helping with the sails, while the shark is portrayed as bold and intimidating with its rows of teeth. The cod is depicted as clever and resourceful, leading the way and taking charge. Finally, the whale enters the scene, offering its mighty power to provide wind if needed. The fisherman, undeterred by the challenges, uses his expertise and large net to catch them all.
Overall, "The Fish of the Sea" celebrates the symbiotic relationship between sailors and the creatures of the sea, highlighting the intertwined nature of their lives and the resilience required to navigate the unpredictable ocean. The repetitive nature of the chorus emphasizes unity and solidarity among the sailors, reinforcing the theme of working together in adverse conditions.
