She Said
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Baby, have mercy, please don't be unkind!
I remember chips of woman let me down and blew my mind.
For out of my back, she's gonna look way back into the back of my eyes.
She said: "You've done your baby wrong and you know you're gonna die tonight."

Now, the villagers are coming with a pitchfork and a screaming dog.
I got long black hair growing way out of the back of my skull.
Feeling kinda itchy, I got blood on my mouth.
She said: "You gotta get away, come on baby, go on way down south!"

She said, she said, she said, she said.

She said: "You got nothing left, you ain't a man no more, you're outta control.
And the moon, baby, is blooming, you're gonna find out, what it's like to lose your soul."
Now, my teeth are long, hair's growing on my palm. What have I done?
I said: "Get up now, please baby! Come on! I gotta fly, I gotta run."

She said, she said, she said, she said.

I crave to taste the blood. Lord almighty, good Loard above, my soul is lost!
I said: "I curse the day that I ever was born!"
Baby, have mercy, don't you hear me screaming in pain?
I said my prayers at night, come on please, I won't forsake your name!

They're gonna lay me right here in this marshy swamp.
Hit by a silver bullet right throught my heart.

She said, she said, she said.
She said: "Werewolf".

She said: "Werewolf".
She said: "Werewolf".

Overall Meaning

The song "She Said" by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion depicts the story of a man who is facing the consequences of his wrongdoing. The opening line "Baby, have mercy, please don't be unkind!" suggests that this man is pleading for forgiveness and mercy. He remembers a woman who betrayed him and left him devastated. She has left him feeling vulnerable and exposed, as she can look deep into his eyes and see all his secrets. She accuses him of doing her wrong and threatens that he is going to die tonight, which further adds to his feelings of guilt and fear. The villagers are coming after him, and he has transformed into a werewolf with long black hair growing all over him. The woman tells him to run away down south, implying that he needs to escape his current situation and start over somewhere else. He realizes he has lost control and has nothing left, even his humanity. He feels like he is on the verge of losing his soul and is haunted by images of blood and darkness. The woman tells him that he has turned into a werewolf, implying that he has become a monster, and he will never be the same again.

One of the interesting facts about the song is that it was released in 1993 as a part of their album "Extra Width." It remains one of the band's most popular songs and has been covered by multiple artists. Another fascinating fact is that the band was originally from New York City and formed in 1990. Their sound was a mix of punk, blues, garage rock and was known for being raw and energetic. "She Said" is an excellent representation of their signature sound. Additionally, the song's lyrics were reportedly inspired by the 1941 horror film "The Wolf Man." The growling, howling background vocals in the chorus further emphasize the werewolf theme. The song's music video features the band members performing the song and a brief appearance from Wayne Coyne, the lead singer of The Flaming Lips. The song has been listed on several "best of" lists over the years, including Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time" and has been covered by artists like Arctic Monkeys and Autolux. The chords for the song are not available online, but some tabs have been created by fans that can be found on guitar tab websites.

In conclusion, "She Said" is a powerful song that tells a story of guilt, shame, and transformation. The song explores themes of betrayal, loneliness, and the consequences of our actions. The haunting lyrics, raw vocals, and hypnotic guitar riffs make this song a classic of the Blues rock genre.

I know someone who saw these at a work gig, he had no idea who they were. Sat at the bar he saw some guy next to him, stifled laughter, turned to his gf and said "check this guy out, thinks he's fucking Elvis". Of course it was John Spencer.
