The group consisted of sisters Brenda, Valorie and Shirley Jones. They served as backup singers for Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass, Aretha Franklin, and Le Pamplemousse. They worked with Diana Ross from 1975β78 and were the backup singers on Linda Clifford's 1978 album If My Friends Could See Me Now and on Tower of Power's lowly rated 1979 album Back on the Streets.
Their biggest hit was "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else". The song broke the Billboard Magazine Top 40 at #38 in May 1979. The song was also a Top 5 R&B hit. It became a gold record.
An additional hit followed in 1980, with the single "I Just Love The Man", charting at #9 in January 1981. The less successful "Nights Over Egypt" (released in 1981, charting at R&B #23 in 1982 and written by Dexter Wansel), is currently a cult classic that receives more airplay on urban radio stations than their previous bigger hits.
After the release and failure of their fourth U.S. album, On Target, lead singer Shirley Jones pursued a solo career and had a #1 R&B hit on Billboard with "Do You Get Enough Love", from her top-ten debut album Always in the Mood (1986). "Do You Get Enough Love" was written by Bunny Sigler who also produced it with Kenny Gamble. In 2007, Shirley released an album Ladies Night Out together with Jean Carn and Cherrelle, on CD and DVD.
"Who Can I Run To", from the band's self-titled 1979 debut album, was covered by Xscape in 1995. Their cover version became a number #1 R&B and #8 Pop hit. The original version was the B-side of "You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else".
Valorie Jones died on December 2, 2001, in Detroit, Michigan, at the age of 45. Lead singer Shirley Jones continues to perform successfully as The Jones Girls with two of her nieces and a nephew on background vocals.
Brenda Jones eventually moved to Atlanta, where she sang frequently with her four-piece band, performing both Jazz and R&B numbers, including many Jones Girls' tunes. She later moved to New York after her children were grown, to have a more active performing and recording schedule. On April 4, 2017 Brenda died.
Dance Turned Into A Romance
The Jones Girls Lyrics

A dance turned into a romance
The very first time we danced across the floor
A dance turned into a romance
The very first time we danced across the floor
I like the way you move your body
Especially when your body is movin' close to mine
And you asked me for a date
To give you my phone number
A dance turned into a romance
The very first time you held me in your arms
A dance turned into a romance
I was hypnotized, captured by your charm--
We danced, and danced the whole night thru---
All I could think of is makin' love to you--
And when you take me home
And we were all alone
And he kissed me on my lips
A dance turned into a romance
You swept me right off, right off my feet
A danced turned into a romance
I couldn't help but fall
Because you are so sweet
[Instrumental]
[Verse]
The Jones Girls's song Dance Turned Into A Romance tells the tale of how a simple dance led to a beautiful romance. The lyrics describe the first time they danced together and how they both felt immediately drawn to one another. The singer expresses how much she enjoys the way he moves and how she was eager to give him her phone number when he asked her out on a date. As the song progresses, the story unfolds and we learn how the romance deepened after that first dance. The singer was completely captivated by his charm and they danced the whole night through, lost in their own world. It was then that she knew all she could think of was making love to him. When he finally kissed her on the lips, everything fell into place and that dance turned into a beautiful romance.
The song is a perfect representation of how something as simple as a dance can lead to the most beautiful bond between two people. The lyrics paint a picture of a magical night where everything just falls into place. The Jones Girls's harmonious voices only add to the dreamy mood of the song.

Def a better range than The Emotions and Sister Sledge. The Pointers were the best though, imo but the JG never got their due as vocalist.

@Cam Jones ,your mother and aunties Elegant & Gorgeous. I was Teenager Lady, during the 1980s. I was in awe of their Angelic Voices, Wardrobe Attire and Beauty. They had so many Gem songs. I was entering into the 7th Grade during the earlier 1980s. Nights Over Egypt were one of my favorite songs. I was listening to that song over the weekend. I would have loved to have seen a Video for that song. RIP to Valorie & Brenda Jones and Shirley Jones is still gorgeous as always.πΉπΉπΉ
