Nothing New
The Joyces Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Easy come
Easy go
But at the end they never show
What they want
But what do they want?
Give me this
Give me that
That's all we hear
While they just pass through
Nothing new?

Why can't anyone be themselves
Always faking what they just can't
Do you like to play pretend
Will never know how this is gonna end

Easy come
Easy go
But at the end they never show
What they want
But what do they want?
Give me this
Give me that
That's all we hear
While they just pass through
Nothing new?

Why can't anyone be themselves
Always faking what they just can't

Do you like to play pretend
Will never know how this is gonna end

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Joyces's "Nothing New" seem to be a critique of our modern society and the superficiality that seems to pervade it. The opening lines "Easy come, easy go, but at the end they never show, what they want, but what do they want?" seem to suggest that people are always in a rush, always moving quickly from one thing to the next. They never stop to figure out what it is they truly want from life. Instead, they simply go with the flow, taking what comes their way without any real thought or emotion.

The lines "Give me this, give me that, that's all we hear, while they just pass through, nothing new?" suggest a certain amount of frustration on the part of the singers. They are tired of hearing the same old excuses and complaints from people, and they want more from life. They want something new and exciting, something that will break the monotony and the boredom of their everyday existence. They want people to be real, to be authentic, to be themselves.

The lines "Why can't anyone be themselves, always faking what they just can't, do you like to play pretend, will never know how this is gonna end?" further underscore this theme of authenticity. The singers seem to be saying that people are always pretending to be someone or something they are not, and that this is simply not sustainable. For one thing, it is incredibly tiring and stressful to try and be someone you are not. For another, it is never clear how this kind of behavior will end. Will the person ultimately be happy and fulfilled, or will they simply continue to be lost and unfulfilled?
