Native Son
The Judybats Lyrics
Native son
What have you done
Where have you been
Who do you know
Where have you been
Who do you know?
CHORUS
Nothing
No one
Nowhere
Nothing
No one
Nowhere
I'm still picking things
>From the air
Dizzy boy
Is there still joy
In being free
And in between
In being free
And in between?
CHORUS
Nothing no one nowhere
Nothing no one nowhere
Nothing no one nowhere
Nothing no one nowhere
I'm gonna la-la-la-la-la-la
My way through life
I'm gonna la-la-la-la-la-la
My way through life
I'm gonna la-la-la-la-la-la
My way through this life
Nowhere

The Judybats were an "alternative rock" band from Knoxville, Tennessee. They recorded four albums and two singles from 1990 to 1994 and had minor success with a cover of Roky Erickson's "She Lives (In A Time of Her Own)" and their 1993 song "Being Simple". Other fan favorites were "Don't Drop the Baby", "Ugly on the Outside", "She's Sad She Said", "All I Want To Do Is F*ck Your Hair", and a cover of the Gary Numan track "Cars", the latter two being b-sides. Jeff Heiskell, the singer, and later members Dave Jenkins and Paul Noe formed the totally unknown but great Doubters Club that recorded for the Disgraceland label in 1995 and then broke up when Jenkins and Noe ran off to Nashville to form a (terrible) mod-rock band that failed (miserably). Jeff reformed the Judybats in 2000 with the album "'00" and subsequently rocked Knoxville, Chicago, Baltimore, and all points in-between on numerous small tours promoting their album and their later EP "Six Pack of New Tracks".
Currently, Jeff is working with Heiskell, a band formed with Mike Hairrell (percussion), Doug Hairrell (guitar), and Rob Bell (bass), all members of The second iteration of the Judybats.

This song still sounds as fresh and cool and weird as it did 20 years ago.

If anyone wants to know what indie (although we called ourselves "alternative") college students looked like in 1989, this video is all you need to look at. I was there, I was one, and this is 100% it.

The truth about the 80's alt rock scene was that you didn't have to act a certain way or wear certain clothes to fit a specific narative. You could just enjoy the music.

The Mighty Cass the tuxedo jacket, leggings & birds nest hair were my jam! ❤️

I talked to Peggy once after a concert in 1991 and said I loved the part in the video (around 2:35) where she flips her glasses up and down. She actually blushed. It was the cutest thing ever. This song just brings back so many memories. Thanks for posting it!

All GREAT songs have little hooks that are crushingly perfect. NATIVE SON has that moment at 2:42 , when the "nothing no one, nowhere" progression walks down a "half" step...unique to that moment in the song....musically perfect!

It's a decent indie rock song for sure. I believe the song "needs" a release around the time you're saying otherwise our pop-trained ears will think the song just went boring.
