Na Na Na
The Kelly Family Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In this grey grey world where nobody sings
I saw the face of a human doll
Her eyes were glass and her hair was gold
From her sweet soft lips
You could hear that song go

Na na na, na na na na, na na na, na na na na...
In a place where hell is around the corner
I touched her hand it was baby sweet
She kissed me there
I could feel the song going down my throat
She was singing to me

Na na na, na na na na, na na na, na na na na...

My daddy said: " if you wanna live
You better not touch this is not a toy
The truth is boy I'm a bloody fool
I left the one that I loved behind singing"

Na na na, na na na na, na na na, na na na na...

Tell me what it is that brings me back to you
Tell me what it is, I can't stop loving you
Tell me what it is that brings me back to you
Tell me what it is, I can't stop loving you

So take me back to the land of yours
Where the black swan loves the one I lost
My generation sings with the radio on
The melody of the human doll

Na na na, na na na na, na na na, na na na na...

Overall Meaning

The Kelly Family's Na Na Na is a song about a chance encounter with a human doll in a grey, lifeless world where no one sings. The singer describes the doll's features - her glass eyes and gold hair - and how her sweet, soft lips sing the charming chorus of the song. Despite being in a place where hell is around the corner, the singer touches the doll's hand and is kissed by her. The doll's song goes down the singer's throat, and he can feel her singing to him.

The second verse seems to address the warning the singer received from his dad about not touching the doll, implying that the dad might have had a similar experience in the past, leaving someone he loved behind singing. The chorus continues after the second verse, with the repeated refrain of "na na na," a seemingly meaningless string of syllables that is, in this context, a symbol of the life and joy that the human doll brings to the singer. The final verse begs the question of why the singer can't stop loving the human doll, and he wants to go back to the land where he knew her and where his generation sings with the radio on, celebrating music and the joy it brings.

When I was 17-18, I was a huge huge fan of the Kellys. And I have always been. But at that time, if I saw them this mature and adult, I would be laughing with a "no, thank you, I dont want to listen to these elderly people". But you know what is funny? As I am 38 now, I look the same! I look exactly as "elderly" as them. And I am happy. And I believe the Kellys are happy too. We all have grown a bit old, but not too old to be happy. So KEEP ON SINGING, Kellys. I love you! Your music is still as great as it used to be!

@muttib5

ich mag die progressive Stimme von Joe und hoffe , das die Kinder und Enkel weiter als "Kelly-Familie" singen, denn diese Familie hat einfach die Musik im Blut

I've never stopped loving you. I will never forget the summer of 1999 and your concert in Sarajevo, and a day later I had the honor to meet you. You so much thrilled me with your courtesy and admiration, even though you were tired, you had patience for the fans. I love you and I hope that you will again come to Sarajevo and the beautiful Bosnia. 💜💜💜💜

@kuschelfreddy

Although Jimmy might not be the best singer of the Kellys (imho that's John) he definitely has the best style. I just love his rock attitude.
