What Do I Have to Do?
The Kicks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's gone, & she's gone so lost with him

I'll wait & I'll wait 'til my ship comes in
Her warm embrace could carry me
What never was has turned on me,
& Now without her...

What do I have to do?
What do I have to say?
Who do I have to kill to make you feel this way
...to make you feel this way...

What do I have to do?
What do I have to say?
Who do I have to kill to make you feel this way
...to make you feel this way...

He holds her then they fall to sleep
She holds my heart
Echoes so deep,
& now without her...

What do I have to do?
What do I have to say?
Who do I have to kill to make you feel this way
...to make you feel this way...

What do I have to do?
What do I have to say?
Who do I have to kill to make you feel this way
...to make you feel this

She's my stars come out
She's my everything
But I can't tell her now
What I should've said

What do I have to do?
What do I have to say?
Who do I have to kill?

What do I have to do?
What do I have to say?
Who do I have to kill?

When your plans & your dreams suffocate everything
He's going to break your heart
When you're shattered & broken
With the mark of a token
Remember how I fell apart
'Cause I'm not crying anymore

What do I have to do?
What do I have to say?

Who do I have to kill to make you feel this way
...to make you feel this

Overall Meaning

The Kicks' song What Do I Have to Do? is a powerful ballad about unrequited love and the pain that it brings. The singer is deeply in love with a woman who is in a relationship with another man, causing him immense sadness and heartbreak. He waits patiently for his opportunity to win her over, but it seems that no matter what he does, she remains out of his reach. He becomes desperate, even entertaining the thought of violence, asking the question repeatedly: "What do I have to do? What do I have to say? Who do I have to kill to make you feel this way…to make you feel this way?"

The lyrics paint a picture of a man who is caught in a painful dilemma – he loves this woman with all his heart, but he cannot bear the thought of losing her. He is willing to do anything to make her happy, but he is also aware that he cannot force her to feel the same way. He is left with nothing but his fantasies, his dreams, and his broken heart. In the final verse of the song, the singer seems to be warning the woman that the man she is in a relationship with will eventually hurt her, and that she should remember how deeply the singer cared for her when that happens.

Some parents are easier to come out to than others.

My daughter came out to me twice.

First time was bi, the second was trans.

I accept her for who she is, and will always be there for her.

That is what being a parent is about for me. Unconditional love.

Let me tell you something that you already know. The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows it’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You me or nobody is going to hit as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard you hit it’s about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward? That’s how winning is done. Know if you know what you’re worth now go on and get what you’re worth but you got to be willing to take the hits and not point a finger saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him or her or anybody. Cowards do that that ain’t you you’re better than that.
