- Mr. Brightside
The Killers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress now
Let me go
And I just can't look, it's killing me
And taking control

Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr. Brightside

I'm coming out of my cage
And I've been doing just fine
Gotta gotta be down
Because I want it all
It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss
Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag
Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head
But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress now
Let me go
'Cause I just can't look, it's killing me
And taking control

Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibi
But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
'Cause I'm Mr. Brightside
I never
I never

I never
I never

Overall Meaning

Mr. Brightside is a song by The Killers that tells the story of a man who is struggling to come to terms with his girlfriend's infidelity. The song starts with the singer reflecting on his situation, telling us that he's been doing fine, although he seems to be trying to convince himself more than anyone else. He's conflicted because he desperately wants everything his girlfriend has to offer, but it's clear that he knows she's cheating on him. Despite this, he cannot help but feel incredibly jealous and betrayed. He watches as she leaves for the night with another man, and he's left alone with his thoughts, and it becomes clear that he's going crazy.

The song's chorus, "Jealousy, turning saints into the sea," is a reference to the Biblical story of St. Peter, who was said to have walked on water until he lost faith and began to sink. The singer is similarly sinking, consumed by his jealousy and despair. He's swimming through "sick lullabies," which could be interpreted as the lies he tells himself to try and make sense of what's happening. The song ends on an ambiguous note, with the singer repeating the phrase "I never" several times, leaving listeners to fill in the blanks for themselves.
