All These Things That I've Done
The Killers Lyrics

When there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
One more son
If you can hold on
If you can hold on, hold on
I want to stand up, I want to let go
You know, you know, no you don't, you don't
I want to shine on in the hearts of men
I want a meaning from the back of my broken hand
Another head aches, another heart breaks
I am so much older than I can take
And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection, no no no no

Help me out, yeah
You know you got to help me out, yeah
Oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out, yeah

And when there's nowhere else to run
Is there room for one more son
These changes ain't changing me
The cold hearted boy I used to be

Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down

I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier
I got soul, but I'm not a soldier

(Time, truth and hearts)
Yeah, you know you got to help me out
Yeah, oh don't you put me on the backburner
You know you got to help me out, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down, yeah
Oh don't you put me on the backburner
You're gonna bring yourself down, yeah
You're gonna bring yourself down

Over and in, last call for sin
While everyone's lost, the battle is won
With all these things that I've done
All these things that I've done
(Time, truth and hearts)
If you can hold on
If you can hold on

And my affection, well it comes and goes
I need direction to perfection, no no no no
Help me out, yeah
You know you gotta help me out, yeah
Oh, don't you put me on the back burner
You know you gotta help me out, yeah

I remember loving this song the first time I discovered it just being a teenager on the internet. Apparently y'all were so impactful you got a Wikipedia page JUST for this song. It tells me this song was released in August 30, 2004. I heard it the first time without the spoken word on this version.

Like many people, I stopped being that "angsty teen" and tried to put on my "big girl pants" and shuffle on to college and try, like everyone, to reinvent myself in a manner that was "adult" and "acceptable" so that I might get a job and be allowed to live in a nice house, in a nice neighborhood, living a nice life to have some nice kids who can do the same nice things.

I did find myself looking at essentially a shotgun taking someone's life.

I also found myself friends with a lovely lady who had a passion for giggles, videogames, and singing along to Disney... listening to her parent's wishes regardless of her age. She was the perfect vision of following the rule, even when she'd confess her secrets to me after I'd confessed mine to her.

She chased a passion her senior year and I listened to this song for the first time in many years as an acapella arrangement in a cold/end of year holiday season presentation in a house of worship. She was on stage singing. She held my hand after I lit a candle for someone I never got to go to a funeral for, despite watching them die and wanting to be there. It wasn't a decision I got to make. Others decided I was to be excluded because of excuses.

I know why I would want this song to have a wiki page but my life isn't everyone else's.

I listened to this song in mixtapes I'd make for others to listen to in my spaces (hint, hint) because I knew how to code in .mp3 live players onto HTML pages. Because I knew that listing on the player both the Artist and the Title was the only way other people would know. I was pretending to be some satellite radio because all I did was type .mp3 into the search engines. I looked for uploads. I looked for hosts.

I hosted this song as a soundtrack of my life piggybacking off of who the hell even knows on the upload. It never stopped playing, to the best of my knowledge.

I appreciate that I was allowed to share it with the world as a cry of "I can't and don't exist by myself."

I found many other songs y'all did, all just as dynamic and creating personal opinion... but for this one? You got a wiki page just for the song of it... Why aren't the lyrics there though? Just... Why not? If it's meant to be accesible to the world... why can we read about a song without being able to be lost in the whole experience FROM the wiki? Read the lyrics as we listen to the song?

If I could afford it, I would donate money for this. Wiki take my cash and permanently host the lyrics and the official educational version of the song. Let kids get the sheet music. Let adults. Why must I also spend so much extra time reading just encyclopedic knowledge without having direct access to the art?

Dan Brown got to publish the "Illustrated" version of Da Vinci Code so everyone might feel like they are traveling through Italy and seeing the statues and paintings in a fictionalized reality. How is my request any different?

Thank you for making a universal experience. Thank you for comforting me in my desire to feel independent from and interdependent with society without a blessed idea of what to do other than just march on and hold on when I couldn't march anymore.

This song has helped me come back from the brink a few times. I’ve been at the end of my rope several times, suicide hotline, doctors, medication. But in the end I kept holding on, kept fighting. Like “I’ve got soul, but I’m not a soldier” I’ve got the will to fight, but I’m not a fighter. If anyone finds this comment, just remember you can always keep moving, hold your head high and hold on.

Edit: Still here! I'd forgotten about this comment! haha. Life is still tough, but now I'm sober. 2020 was a hell of a ride for me, as I'm sure it was for a great many people. But I'd like to thank you all for such a wonderful outcry of support and kindness. Sometimes I've forgotten that we're all in this life together. Be kind everyone, and hold on!

I remember being a little girl and singing this in my dads van while he drove me to preschool. We’d scream ‘I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier’ and he’d air drum (he’s a great drummer) and every time I hear this I get this overwhelming surge of love for my dad. I feel like a little girl again.
