Smile Like You Mean It
The Killers Lyrics
Save some face, you know you've only got one
Change your ways while you're young
Boy, one day you'll be a man
Oh girl, he'll help you understand
Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it
Looking back at sunsets on the East side
We lost track of the time
Some things slide by so carelessly
Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it
And someone is calling my name
From the back of the restaurant
And someone is playing a game
In the house that I grew up in
And someone will drive her around
Down the same streets that I did
On the same streets that I did
Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it
Smile like you mean it
Oh no, oh no no no
Oh no, oh no no no

The band claims that they wrote the song in 8 minutes.
The song originally featured on the Mr. Brightside EP released in September 2003.
The music video for this song shows ghostly figures of the band wandering around a house that the characters of the song presumably used to live in. While Flowers sings to the camera, flashbacks of the old house are shown behind him, including a children's party, a Christmas morning, a high school party, and a funeral. While these extras are oblivious to being watched, at the end they turn to the camera to look at the viewer while the band fades away.
Billboard said the song "seems to deal with coming to terms with growing up and getting older."
Chuck Arnold with People magazine called the song "a sardonic moper worthy of the Smiths." Billboard said the single is "more restrained and downtempo compared with the band's previous hits" but otherwise "pretty upbeat and is awash with soaring new wave synthesizers and 'killer' guitars." In the UK the song was voted at 91 on Absolute Radio's 100 Best Songs of the Decade.
David Gray performed an acoustic version of "Smile Like You Mean It" on BBC's Radio 1 in the Live Lounge. Tally Hall covered the song for the sixth The O.C. soundtrack: Music from the OC: Mix 6.
The song was released as a downloadable track for the music video game series Rock Band on November 25, 2008.

This song was the very first The Killers song I have heard and made me fall in love with this band - I'll never forget that day. When I was 18 there was that girl, Kamila, she was coming home the same bus I did and I had huge crush on her. She was like taken straight from my dreams: blue, dreamy eyes, delicate, girly face, long blonde hair, modestly clothed, little to no make up. She usually had company of two friends - "slutty" (by that time fashionably, tons of make up etc.) dressed chicks. I always couldn't stop laughing when I looked at them cuz this silent, calm girl just outclassed them easily.
I spent whole year watching her, praying to God for at least tiny occasion to know her, talk to her but none appeared. I knew her name and surname - thanks to my friend who was - by that time - going with her to the same school and even though I have never found enough courage and guts to go and at least try to speak with her... and then there was that evening.. I was coming home after I have passed my driving license (You can imagine how happy I was), bus was almost empty and when it stopped at her bus stop I saw her, my heart started to beat fast, blood begun to flow faster within my veins - full on endorphin I thought "this is it buddy, this is Your occasion" but before I even stopped motivating myself I saw that guy behind her, she turned to him and.. kissed him for goodbye. I was shattered and in this one moment all happiness, positivity I had, turned into Mt. Everest of pain, anger and hatred. It wasn't over though.. bus was almost empty yet she sat down next to me and started small talk.. You can only imagine how I felt, it was comedy gold of life irony, I begged and dreamed so long for moment as such and it was given to.. but distorted and twisted.
When I arrived home I went on a walk, climbed my garage roof and watched stars in silence, thinking about all of this that happened. I came back home 2 A.M, turned my computer, went straight for YouTube to play some music and I don't know how or why but after few tracks "Smile Like You mean It" came in and.. well, helped me a LOT to deal with my feelings - after that evening, thanks to this song The Killers became one of my favourite bands.
Just smile like You meant it :)

A dark and poignant song about growing up.
Growing up is one of the hardest things; when we are children life seems to straightforward, we are surrounded by people who love us and want to see us thrive. The world seems full and we are excited by the propest of adulthood.
Then adulthood arrives and we lose our innocence, life seems complicated, we struggle, childhood friends move away, there is no longer the routine of school, parents - who once seemed so capable and in charge, age and become weak. We become filled with regrets for dreams that went unfulfilled.....
It's tough when you are a young adult.
"Oh no no no no no" is one the most powerful lines in this song for me.

Extremely unpopular opinion: Hot Fuss caught lightning in a bottle.
I love The Killers, but the rest of their discog is either just a little too pop-y or too folksy. But Hot Fuss? Just absolute perfection.
The simple jangly guitar licks blend into the dark complex synths, forming this wistful bittersweet sound that even The Killers have a hard time replicating. Track after track, the entire album is catchy and endlessly replayable, but it's just deep enough so you never, ever get sick of it. They managed to bridge the Garage Revival of the 2000's and the EDM craze of the 2010's by, what I can only imagine is, forbidden witchcraft. Mr. Brightside isn't even the best track, and yet it will STILL be played on the radio on repeat well after mankind is wiped out by The Event in 2027.

The fuck is the event in 2027? Other than that I agree for the most part.
