The Way It Was
The Killers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I drove through the desert last night
I carried the weight of our last fight
Elvis singing "don't be cruel"
And I wonder if you feel it too
It's like we're going under

Somewhere outside the lonely Esmeralda county line
The question of my heart came to my mind

If I go on
With you by my side
Can it be
The way it was
When we met
Did you forget all about those golden nights?

Maybe a thief stole your heart
Or maybe we just drifted apart
I remember driving
In my daddy's car to the airfield
Blanket on the hood, backs against the windshield
Back then this thing was running on momentum, love and trust
That paradise is buried in the dust

If I go on
With you by my side
Can it be
The way it was
When we met
Did you forget all about those golden nights?
(The way it was)

All of our plans have fallen through
Sometimes a dream, it don't come true

Darling!
Darling!

If we go on
Can it be (can it be)
The way it was
When we met
Did you forget all about them golden nights?

If I go on
With you by my side
Can it be
The way it was
My heart is true
Girl, it's just you
I'm thinking of
Can it be the way it was?

Maybe a thief stole your heart

Overall Meaning

The Killers' song "The Way It Was" tells the story of a failed relationship and the nostalgia that comes with it. The singer drives through the desert, carrying the weight of their last fight with their partner. They listen to Elvis Presley's "Don't Be Cruel" and wonder if their partner still feels the same way they do. The imagery of the desert and the lonely Esmeralda county line create a sense of isolation and desperation. The singer questions whether they can go back to the way things were when they first met and if their partner has forgotten the "golden nights" they shared.

The song's chorus repeats the question "Can it be the way it was?" as the singer reminisces about the past. They remember a time when they drove in their father's car to the airfield, laying a blanket on the hood and leaning against the windshield. The lyrics suggest that the relationship once ran on "momentum, love, and trust," but now that paradise is "buried in the dust." The bridge of the song acknowledges that sometimes dreams don't come true, and all of their plans have fallen through.

@weakweek85

the "maybe a thief stole your heart" at the end gives me the chills. I love this song

@aksaralangit5468

weakweek85 but brandon chooses to sing "i drove to the desert last night" on concerts.

@starlight7491

@Aksara Langit he prefers to stay there???

@matthedges6625

I think this line is better as the ending in concerts which he rarely does. This line has more soul. Its sung with sadness too.

@trevgreg2

@Aksara Langit Intially, he used the "maybe the thief..." line. But he changed it a year or so after the premiered it on the road.

@libby479
