Wild Charms
The Kills渀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

To the doting boys by your side,
Riding roughshod on your starless nights.
To she who played concertos,
Foul and black,
Upon my heartstrings and never looked back.

What became of those wild charms?
The deep fry of the tide?
The tug of the stars?
How it stirs me,

How it stirs me now.
To think my fire burnt them out.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Kills' song Wild Charms refer to someone who is reflecting on their past relationship with a woman who had a group of doting men by her side. The lyricist is realizing that she was riding roughshod on her starless nights without him, while he was left feeling heartbroken and used. She was able to play concertos on his heartstrings with her foul and black charms, leaving him with nothing but a burnt-out fire of what was once wild and passionate.

The chorus "What became of those wild charms? The deep fry of the tide? The tug of the stars?" suggests that the lyricist is wondering what happened to their passion and spark. He is wondering if this fire was swallowed up by the deep fry of the tide or if it has been left behind with the long-gone stars. However, the lyricist admits that thinking about how his fire burnt them out stirs him even now.

Overall, the lyrics of Wild Charms convey a sense of nostalgia for a past love but also an acceptance that the passion and wildness have died out.

I love Alison's voice, but it would be really cool if they did an EP or a double A side with Jamie singing lead on every track

Love this song.  I would love to hear an album the Kills make of just him singing.  I always love to hear him cover some songs because he was a real unique quality to his voice.  To me Jamie is a far more effective singer than people like Jennifer Hudson and singers of that ilk.
