Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen
The King's Singers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Es ist ein Ros entsprungen,
Aus einer Wurzel zart,
Aus uns die Alten sungen,
Von Jesse kam die Art,
Und hat ein Blümlein bracht
Mitten im kalten Winter
Wohl zu der halben Nacht.
Das Röslein, das ich meine,
davon Jesaia sagt,
hat uns gebracht alleine,
Marie, die reine Magd.
Aus Gottes er'gem Rat
hat sie ein Kind geboren
welches uns selig macht.
O Jesu, bis zum Scheiden
aus diesem Jammertal.
Lass Dein hilf uns geleiten
hin in den Freudensaal,
In Deines Vaters Reich,

da wir Dich ewig loben.
O Gott, uns das verleih.

Overall Meaning

The song "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" is a traditional German Christmas carol that has been performed and recorded by many artists over the years. The lyrics of the song describe the birth of Jesus Christ, with specific reference to the prophecy in the Book of Isaiah that a "rose" would bloom from the stem of Jesse, the father of King David. The opening lines of the song set the scene for the birth of Christ, describing how a rose has sprung from a delicate root. The second half of each verse goes on to explain the significance of this image, with reference to the prophecy in Isaiah that a descendant of Jesse would bring salvation to the world. The final verse is a prayer for guidance and salvation, asking for help to reach the "joyful hall" of heaven where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

Overall, the lyrics of "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" are a powerful expression of hope and faith, celebrating the birth of Christ and the promise of salvation that he brings to all who believe in him.

You are correct about part of the first line being about a rose in spring, but the context with the rest of the verse must have been lost.  The English title of the song is Lo How a Rose Ere Blooming and the lyrics are as follows.

Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung!
Of Jesse’s lineage coming, as men of old have sung.
It came, a floweret bright, amid the cold of winter,
When half spent was the night.
Isaiah ’twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind;
With Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind.
To show God’s love aright, she bore to men a Savior,
When half spent was the night.
The shepherds heard the story proclaimed by angels bright,
How Christ, the Lord of glory was born on earth this night.
To Bethlehem they sped and in the manger found Him,
As angel heralds said.
This Flower, whose fragrance tender with sweetness fills the air,
Dispels with glorious splendor the darkness everywhere;
True Man, yet very God, from sin and death He saves us,
And lightens every load.
O Savior, Child of Mary, who felt our human woe,
O Savior, King of glory, who dost our weakness know;
Bring us at length we pray, to the bright courts of Heaven,
And to the endless day!

When I first heard this hymn being sung, I was a young American man living in Germany in 1982. It was like the very voice of God speaking to me about His Christ and was a part of His call to me to have faith in Him alone.

Beautiful share....well, it was written/composed by Pretourious in 1599...divinely inspired, no doubt!

Truly powerfully, inspirational and transforming piece!

En France à Noël on le chante sur les paroles " Dans une étable obscure.." Très beau choral paisible et méditatif...

Very touching testimony.

Every year, I keep coming back to this interpretation of this magnificent aria. The King's Singers are just beyond words

Probably the best version of this piece of music, which is simply one of the best pieces of music anyway. I can't imagine an improvement they could make, every syllable is crystal clear, and the harmonising identifies the chord variation. Quite awesome, if only it would last 60 minutes!

Janet

Just beautiful. Harmony doesn't get any better than in this piece.

vetlerradio

What do you mean, this is a simple piece harmonically, but I must agree, the cadences are truly pure and satisfying.
