1. The Kingpins ar… Read Full Bio ↴There are at least two bands called The Kingpins.
1. The Kingpins are a "road-tested, consumer-approved" rock quintet from Montreal, Canada, with a past as a ska unit with a brass section, organ, spy-flick guitar licks and rock-steady rhythms. The first Kingpins single, 'On the Run', won a MiMi (Montreal Independent Music Industry) award for 'Best Single' in 1995. The following year saw the dawn of their own label Stomp Records and the first Kingpins full-length, 'Watch Your Back?'. By 1997 the band was on newspaper covers and national TV, trapped between grunge and techno. The band's second album, 'Let's Go To Work' (1999), got them nationwide mainstream airplay, headline gigs all over Europe, NorthAmerica and Japan, as well as breakout slots on packages like the Warped Tour. Their third full-length, 'Plan of Action', saw them make choices. The line-up was stripped down to a five-piece, with Lorraine taking up vocal duties full-time. While maintaining solid ties to the rhythms and positive energy of ska, they explored punk, pop, new wave, moving balladry, even breakbeats. The album raced to the top of the Canadian college charts.
2. The Kingpins were a young and wild garage beat band from South London, United Kingdom, in the mid-1960s, fronted by Ray Neale. They made a handful of recordings, but never released a record at the time... not under the moniker The Kingpins anyway. They did masqurade as Those Fadin' Colours for a single on the Ember label and as Orange Seaweed for a single on Pye. Some of their recordings as The Kingpins popped up in later decades on some compilations of 1960s garage beat, freakbeat and mod proto-psychedelic mod beat, notably 'You're My Girl'.

We was feeling alright
It was miles away from the Montreal nights
Somebody said something 'bout a really good song that he heard.
In the parking lot
With the radio playing
I do recall that somebody was saying
I'm not sure, but I think he said
That the time she borrowed was time he'd lend
I don't know. I think her name was Heloise or Laura
She would always make a point to drive a boy nuts when she could
So I tried, yes I tried oh Lord I tried to understand
Why the road less travelled is sometimes the best way to go
Well you punch the clock from day to day
I know life need not be that way
I want a way out, if only for just one day
We're loading up the loading ramp
The sound-check's good, we've set up camp
We're ready
Ac couple of Rudies were pounding back forties
And a couple of Chelsea girls sat on the edge of the stage
The music was roaring and Lord the Guinness was flowing
We left our troubles behind, for Just One Day!
The Kingpins' song "Just One Day" depicts a night out where the singer meets with a group of friends to have a good time. They start the night by hanging out in the parking lot listening to the radio when someone mentions a really good song they heard. The singer recalls that someone mentioned a girl who was causing someone a whole lot of hurt. He doesn't remember her name, but she made a point to annoy boys whenever she could. The singer reflects on his attempt to understand why the road less traveled is sometimes the best way to go just as they are loading up and about to perform on stage.
The lyrics capture the essence of living in the moment, appreciating friends, and the temporary escape provided by music. The singer is relatable, as he is trying to make the most of the moment and take a break from the monotony of everyday life.
