Formed in 1963 in Muswell Hill, North London, they first gained prominence on the heels of the well-received and highly influential single "You Really Got Me" (1964). The group originally consisted of lead singer/guitarist Ray Davies, his brother lead guitarist Dave Davies, drummer Mick Avory, and bassist Pete Quaife. Quaife left (twice) in the late 1960s, and Avory finally left in 1984 as the result of a long-running dispute with Dave Davies, leaving only the Davies brothers as the core of the original group.
With Ray Davies' songwriting skills and unabashedly English voices, Dave Davies' impressive guitar work, and Avory's tight and steady drumming, the band became one of the best and most influential groups of British pop and the "British Invasion" of the U.S.A., lasting longer than any of their competitors, apart from the Rolling Stones, as they broke up in 1996. Their catalogue of songs has been covered by Van Halen, The Pretenders, The Black Keys, The Stranglers, Queens of the Stone Age , and many more.

Crying
The Kinks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That I loved you when you walked away?
Whoa, I'm crying, crying.
Do you need him just the way,
That I needed you when you left that day?
Whoa, I'm crying, crying.
Crying, crying.
Do you think that he's so glad[? ],
Do you think he loves you so?
Do you think that he'd be mad,
If you never come on home?
I'm crying, crying, crying.
Now my days are spent in sin[? ],
Now that you are loving him.
Whoa, I'm crying, crying.
If you suddenly realize,
That he's not the one to spend your life with,
Whoa, I'm crying, crying.
Crying, crying.
The Kinks's song "Crying" is a heart-wrenching ballad about lost love and the painful aftermath. The singer is questioning whether his former lover is treating her new partner the same way he treated her when he walked away. He desperately cries and asks whether she needs her new partner the same way he needed her when she left him. The lyrics are repetitious, emphasizing the singer's despair and pain.
The singer begins to wonder if her new lover is as happy with her as he was. He questions whether her new lover loves her the way he did, and whether he would be upset if she never returns home. The repetition of the chorus highlights the emotions that the singer is feeling, as he questions the choices that he and his former lover made.
The lyrics also explore the idea of sin and how the singer's days are now spent in sin since his lover left him. He is consumed by his pain and cannot escape the anguish of losing her. The lyrics reveal the singer's vulnerability and his deep need to be with his lover once again.

LYRICS
It is time for you to stop all of your sobbing
Yes it's time for you to stop all of your sobbing oh oh
There's one thing you gotta do
To make me still want you
Gotta stop sobbing now
Yeah, yeah stop it, stop it
It is time for you to laugh instead of crying
Yes it's time for you to laugh so keep on trying oh oh
Each little tear that falls from your eye
Makes, makes me want
To take you in my arms and tell you
To stop all your sobbing
And there's one thing you gotta know
To make me want you so

I never knew that The Kinks sang this.
BBC radio 2, Lisa Tarbuck just played this
by The Pretenders and I said to myself
"I wonder what she's actually saying".
So I Googled it and they had
a photograph of The Kinks playing it.
So I had to check them out.
I love it, however I still don't know what
they are saying. There are too many syllables for it
to be just "better stop sobbing now..."

@Gary Snow 66 here and I can relate to that. One of the pleasures at this age is the time to dive deep into artists I've always known and liked. The Turtles being another example.
