Formed in 1963 in Muswell Hill, North London, they first gained prominence on the heels of the well-received and highly influential single "You Really Got Me" (1964). The group originally consisted of lead singer/guitarist Ray Davies, his brother lead guitarist Dave Davies, drummer Mick Avory, and bassist Pete Quaife. Quaife left (twice) in the late 1960s, and Avory finally left in 1984 as the result of a long-running dispute with Dave Davies, leaving only the Davies brothers as the core of the original group.
With Ray Davies' songwriting skills and unabashedly English voices, Dave Davies' impressive guitar work, and Avory's tight and steady drumming, the band became one of the best and most influential groups of British pop and the "British Invasion" of the U.S.A., lasting longer than any of their competitors, apart from the Rolling Stones, as they broke up in 1996. Their catalogue of songs has been covered by Van Halen, The Pretenders, The Black Keys, The Stranglers, Queens of the Stone Age , and many more.

Come on, little baby, play hide 'n' go seek with me
We're gonna play the game, the way it oughta be
Now, I spy, kick 'em in the eye
I'm gonna get you sweetie pie, oh-boy
Oh-boy, oh-boy
Have me some fun tonight
Go way over yonder' hide behind the big oak tree
Ain't nobody gonna play the game, but you and me
Now, ten, twenty, twenty-five, thirty
Thirty-five, fourty, lawdy miss Claudie, oh-boy
Oh-boy, oh-boy
Get me some love tonight
Now, all ain't here, can't hide over
You can't hide behind a four leaf clover, oh-boy
Oh-boy, oh-boy
Have me some fun tonight
Now, I spy, hit 'em in the eye
I'm gonna get you sweetie pie, oh-boy
Oh-boy, oh-boy
I'ma ave me some fun tonight
Are you ready? (no-no-no-no)
Are you ready? (no-no-no-no)
Are you ready? (no-no-no-no)
Are you ready? (no-no-no-no)
Are you ready? (yes-yes)
Here I come
The Kinks's song Hide and Seek is a high-energy, upbeat track about a playful game of hide and seek between two lovers. The song starts with the invitation to play hide and seek, and the male character encourages his partner to join him in the game, singing "Come on, little baby, now hide 'n' go seek with me". The lyrics then describe how the game will be played, with the male character "spying" and "kicking in the eye" while the woman hides behind a big oak tree. The lyrics are filled with sexual innuendos, as the male character wants to "get" his partner and "have some fun tonight".
As the game gets underway, the male character counts to thirty-five, urging his partner to find a hiding spot. There are rules to the game, and the male character warns that hiding behind a four-leaf clover is not allowed. The game soon turns into a playful pursuit, with the male character once again trying to "get" his partner. The song finishes with the male character asking if his lover is ready, and then he seeks her out.
The lyrics of Hide and Seek reflect the sexual freedom that emerged in the 1960s. The song is playful and fun, but it also celebrates the physical and emotional connection between two lovers. In the context of the time it was written, the song was considered quite racy and controversial.
