Formed in 1963 in Muswell Hill, North London, they first gained prominence on the heels of the well-received and highly influential single "You Really Got Me" (1964). The group originally consisted of lead singer/guitarist Ray Davies, his brother lead guitarist Dave Davies, drummer Mick Avory, and bassist Pete Quaife. Quaife left (twice) in the late 1960s, and Avory finally left in 1984 as the result of a long-running dispute with Dave Davies, leaving only the Davies brothers as the core of the original group.
With Ray Davies' songwriting skills and unabashedly English voices, Dave Davies' impressive guitar work, and Avory's tight and steady drumming, the band became one of the best and most influential groups of British pop and the "British Invasion" of the U.S.A., lasting longer than any of their competitors, apart from the Rolling Stones, as they broke up in 1996. Their catalogue of songs has been covered by Van Halen, The Pretenders, The Black Keys, The Stranglers, Queens of the Stone Age , and many more.

Tell Me Now So I'll Know
The Kinks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There are so many things that I could do.
If you tell me now that I'd know what to do,
Tell me now so I'll know.
Tell me now so I'll know,
There are so many things for me to say.
Without your love I just couldn't live each day,
People tell me that you'll just drift away,
Oh believe me, I need you more each day.
You are my hope, my everything,
I live just for you.
I love you deeply but I guess it doesn't show,
I ache inside 'cause my lips can't let you know
Oh darling, please tell me the truth,
You know I live just for you.
Tell me now so I'll know,
There are so many things that I could do.
If you tell me now that I'd know what to do,
Tell me now so I'll know.
The Kinks's song Tell Me Now So I'll Know is a love ballad that conveys the confusion and desperation of a person seeking clarity about their romantic relationship. The song's opening line, "Tell me now so I'll know," sets the tone for the rest of the lyrics. The singer of the song is pleading for the truth about their partner's feelings, admitting that their uncertainty is causing them too much anxiety.
As the song progresses, the singer illustrates their love for their partner with the lines, "Without your love I just couldn't live each day," and "People tell me that you'll just drift away, Oh believe me, I need you more each day." Their worries about losing their loved one are very real, and they are hoping for some revelation or reassurance that could offer them some hope.
The final lines of the song, "I love you deeply but I guess it doesn't show, I ache inside 'cause my lips can't let you know, Oh darling, please tell me the truth, You know I live just for you," perfectly sums up the song's theme of a person who is looking for clarity and the chance to express their love unreservedly.
