Formed in 1963 in Muswell Hill, North London, they first gained prominence on the heels of the well-received and highly influential single "You Really Got Me" (1964). The group originally consisted of lead singer/guitarist Ray Davies, his brother lead guitarist Dave Davies, drummer Mick Avory, and bassist Pete Quaife. Quaife left (twice) in the late 1960s, and Avory finally left in 1984 as the result of a long-running dispute with Dave Davies, leaving only the Davies brothers as the core of the original group.
With Ray Davies' songwriting skills and unabashedly English voices, Dave Davies' impressive guitar work, and Avory's tight and steady drumming, the band became one of the best and most influential groups of British pop and the "British Invasion" of the U.S.A., lasting longer than any of their competitors, apart from the Rolling Stones, as they broke up in 1996. Their catalogue of songs has been covered by Van Halen, The Pretenders, The Black Keys, The Stranglers, Queens of the Stone Age , and many more.

Trust Your Heart
The Kinks Lyrics

And all that it contained
I would see your face in a misty haze
And wish that you were there
Yes I wished that you were there
Darling fool, I was with you all the way
Be as the flower that unfolds with each day
How very much like me you are
When you come to me
Truly, truly trust your heart
Truly, oh truly trust your heart
Why bear malice just let it go
So what of pride it will swallow you whole
Here's to the judge, to the tyrant, and the beast
You keep a knockin' but you can't come in
Truly, truly trust your heart
Truly, truly trust your heart
The moonlight of your soul, fond memories to unfold
Of the days when we were young
Of the love we'd forever hold
Truly, truly trust your heart
Truly, truly trust your heart
I bring thunder, lightning and rain
For those who administer injustice and pain
Comfort the weak and feed the poor
What on earth do we need government for?
Truly, truly trust your heart
Truly, oh truly trust your heart
The song "Trust Your Heart" by The Kinks is a passionate and reflective appeal to trust one's innermost feelings and emotions regardless of any past regrets or uncertainties. The opening lines of the song describe a place where the singer views the world and sees a loved one's face in a misty haze. Even though the singer wished for the loved one to be there, he was with her all the way as a darling fool. The lyrics offer a beautiful metaphor of a flower that unfolds with each day. This suggests that one should trust the timing of their life and let things naturally unfold.
The second verse of the song appears to address a particular issue of ill-feeling or resentment that the singer feels should be let go of, instead of holding on to it. Perhaps this refers to the lost love of the first verse, or it could be a more universal theme. The message seems to be that malice and pride are not productive in a positive sense and rather detrimental if they are holding someone back. The song takes on a political tone in the final verse, as the Kinks' songwriter, Ray Davies, criticizes those in power who inflict injustice and pain rather than help the weak and poor. This verse feels like a call to action for the listener to resist the more oppressive forces of the world and instead trust their hearts and emotions to guide them towards a better future.
