Formed in 1963 in Muswell Hill, North London, they first gained prominence on the heels of the well-received and highly influential single "You Really Got Me" (1964). The group originally consisted of lead singer/guitarist Ray Davies, his brother lead guitarist Dave Davies, drummer Mick Avory, and bassist Pete Quaife. Quaife left (twice) in the late 1960s, and Avory finally left in 1984 as the result of a long-running dispute with Dave Davies, leaving only the Davies brothers as the core of the original group.
With Ray Davies' songwriting skills and unabashedly English voices, Dave Davies' impressive guitar work, and Avory's tight and steady drumming, the band became one of the best and most influential groups of British pop and the "British Invasion" of the U.S.A., lasting longer than any of their competitors, apart from the Rolling Stones, as they broke up in 1996. Their catalogue of songs has been covered by Van Halen, The Pretenders, The Black Keys, The Stranglers, Queens of the Stone Age , and many more.

What's In Store for Me
The Kinks Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To see what life's cut out for me
I'm waiting for my fate
'Cause I know I've done wrong
I want to know just what's in store for me
I wish I had a crystal ball
To see my rise and see my fall
I've done a lot of right,
I want to know just what's in store for me
And so I'll wait a while
And wait a little longer
I'll just have to wait and see
I think a lot but I'll stop trying
I'll just get old before my time
I'll live the life I've got
But I don't sleep at night
I want to know just what's in store for me
I'll live the life I've got
But I don't sleep at night
I want to know just what's in store for me
I want to know just what's in store for me
The Kinks’s What’s In Store for Me is a song that ponders over the uncertainties of the future. The singer opens the song with a deep desire to understand what his future holds for him. He wants to know what his fate is, what life has cut out for him, and hopes to gain insight into the consequences of the right and wrong he has done. The singer also wishes he had a crystal ball to see his rise and fall. In simple words, the song is telling us that life is uncertain and that we cannot be sure of the events that lie ahead of us.
The singer's anxiety over his future is heightened by his inability to stop thinking about what it holds for him. He tries to stop pondering and enjoy the present, but the thought of what’s in store for him occupies his mind so much that he can't sleep at night. He decides to "live the life he's got," but his eagerness to know what’s in store for him refuses to wane. The song ends with the singer repeating his desire to know what's in store for him even though he has come to appreciate the need to live in the moment.
The song speaks to the very human desire to know what's coming in the future. It is a relatable and poignant reflection on the anxiety and uncertainties of life. The Kinks use their excellent songwriting skills and vocals to capture the feeling of someone who cannot predict the future but desperately wants to know.
