Kirby Stone founded the group and enrollled Eddie Hall, Mike Gardner and Larry Forsterand to complete the quartet.
The group began playing clubs in the New York area. They won slots on local television, including The Ed Sullivan Show, and soon after signed to Columbia Records. Several LPs followed, including Baubles, Bangles and Beads; their version of the song Baubles, Bangles and Beads became a hit in the U.S. in 1958.
Among the backing musicians that played on Kirby Stone Four albums were Jimmy Carroll's orchestra, the Kai Winding Quartet, Alvino Rey, Shelly Manne, and Al Klink. Their style, which melded swing jazz, vocalese, and early rock & roll was referred to as "The Go Sound."

Swingin' down the lane
Everybody's feelin' grand
Swingin' down the lane
That's the time I miss the bliss
That we might have known
Nights like this
When the moon is on the rise
Baby I'm so blue
Watchin' lovers makin' eyes
Like we used to do
When the moon is on the way
Still I'm waitin' all in vain
Should be swingin' down the lane
With you
The Kirby Stone Four's song "Swingin' Down The Lane" talks about walking down the lane with someone special, feeling great and missing the good times spent with that person. The lyrics are filled with nostalgia and melancholy, as the singer remembers past nights spent together, longing for those moments and the companionship of the person they used to share them with. The song's melody captures this feeling perfectly with its upbeat swing style, which may seem contradictory to the sadness behind the lyrics, but it portrays the sense of hope that the singer still carries within themselves.
The chorus is particularly telling - as it mentions "Swingin' down the lane" not once but twice, suggesting that the singer is trying to relive that happy memory, but they are missing that special someone to share it with. The moon is a recurring reference in the song, representing the romantic moments the singer shared with their partner. In contrast, it also highlights how lonely and sad they feel in their absence. In conclusion, the Kirby Stone Four's song "Swingin' Down The Lane" is a poignant depiction of the human experience. It tells about the beauty of companionship, the importance of memories and the pain of their absence.
