Arcadia
The Kite String Tangle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh
Oh

Oh how things have changed
Feels like I don't know you
You're in a whole different place
And I've strayed from who it was that you knew
We're drifting apart we're parallel sinking ships
You're anxiously reaching out but I'm losing my grip

Oh oh oh oh
You were tryin'a make it work
You were sleeping in my shirt
Arcadia (Oh oh oh oh)
Sometimes things don't come full circle

Oh oh oh oh
I was hoping that you'd care
I was distant I was scared
Arcadia (Oh oh oh oh)
Sometimes things don't come full circle

(Sometimes things don't come full circle) Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh

You're still on my mind somehow
You're fit and you're shades of blue
There's no way to go back now
Couldn't get back even if we wanted to
Couldn't get back even if we wanted

Oh oh oh oh
You were tryin'a make it work
You were sleeping in my shirt
Arcadia (Oh oh oh oh)
Sometimes things don't come full circle

Oh oh oh oh
I was hoping that you'd care
I was distant I was scared
Arcadia (Oh oh oh oh)
Sometimes things don't come full circle
(Sometimes things don't come full circle)
Sometimes things don't come full circle

Oh oh oh oh
You were tryin'a make it work
You were sleeping in my shirt
Arcadia (Oh oh oh oh) (Arcadia)
Sometimes things don't come full circle

Oh oh oh oh
I was hoping that you'd care
I was distant I was scared
Arcadia (Oh oh oh oh) (Arcadia)
Sometimes things don't come full circle
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh

Oh oh oh oh oh
Sometimes things don't come full circle (Oh oh oh oh oh)

Overall Meaning

The Kite String Tangle's "Arcadia" is a song that delves into the complexities and ambiguities of a broken relationship. The first verse paints a picture of two people who were once close but have now grown apart. The singer acknowledges that he does not recognize the person he used to know, and that he himself has changed too. The imagery of "parallel sinking ships" emphasizes the distance between them and the inevitable outcome of their separation.

The chorus builds on this theme of distance, showing how the two people have different perspectives on the relationship. The singer suggests that his partner was trying to make it work, but he was distant and scared. The repetition of the lines "sometimes things don't come full circle" emphasizes the idea that even though they may not be able to go back, there is still value in the relationship they had.

The final verse suggests that even though the relationship is over, the memories linger. The singer still thinks about his partner, and the line "you're fit and you're shades of blue" evokes the idea of her being both attractive and melancholy. The final repetition of the chorus emphasizes the bittersweet nature of the song, as the singer acknowledges that things didn't work out, but he still wishes they had.

Danny Harley (lead singer) said this about the meaning behind the song:

“Arcadia” represents an unobtainable ideal that we all create in certain situations. In this case it focuses on a post-relationship situation where you want to go back to that comfortable space that the relationship represented, but things have changed and that place doesn’t exist anymore. It doesn’t stop us from striving for it even though it might be out of reach.

This song was on my ear when i was in an unfamiliar city where i was taking a bus to a stranger's home i met 3 days ago. I still remember that 2014 summer. And to this day, i remember this song from time to time, it's on my memory box playlist so i will remember it fondly for many more years. I bought the album for this 3 years ago after hearing Arcadia for the first time. To this day it is still my all time favourite song! Every time i hear it i feel like i'm hearing it for the first time all over again, which is something i never thought music could do to me. Thank you Danny for making such a wonderful masterpiece.
