shine On
The Kooks＀ Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Safety pins holding up the things
That make you mine
About your hair, you needn't care
You look beautiful all the time

Shine, shine, shine on
Yes, won't you shine, shine on?
Your magazines rip people at the seams
But you still read
I must admit, I don't believe in it
But I see how you get sucked in

Shine, shine, shine on
Yes, won't you shine, shine on?
(Sha-la-la-la)
Shine, shine, shine on
Yes, won't you shine, shine on?

Because you're not done
Why do you bite the hand that feeds you?
Why do you
Why do you bite the hand that feeds? Yeah

Shine, shine, shine on
Yes, won't you shine, shine on?
(Sha-la-la-la)
Shine, shine, shine on
Yes, won't you shine, shine on?

Safety pins holding up the things
That make you mine

About your hair, you needn't care
You look beautiful all of the time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Kooks’ song Shine On are full of contradictions, particularly in relation to the female subject of the song. The opening line speaks of “safety pins holding up the things that make you mine”, referencing an edgy, punk aesthetic. However, the next line acknowledges how beautiful the woman is regardless of her appearance, suggesting that these punk accessories are unnecessary. This mix of tough and tender is continued in the second verse, which observes how the woman continues to read magazines that “rip people at the seams”. The singer doesn’t believe in this behaviour, yet he is charmed by the way she is “sucked in”.

The chorus urges the woman to “shine on”, suggesting that her unique qualities should be embraced, even if they go against the norm. This may be the reason why the woman is biting the hand that feeds her – refusing to conform to societal expectations or play the game. The song encourages her to be herself, even if that means standing out from the crowd. Ultimately, the song is about celebrating individuality.

This is my favourite song from the 70s. I remember hearing it for the first time in 1962.

This was played years ago on MTV, back when I was just a child. I remember spending half of my time on TV just waiting for this song on MTV. Years passed, this song somehow appeared in my head. I've searched for it for nearly 2 weeks. Good to return to the youth!
