Around Town
The Kooks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You can get yourself into a fight
If that's the way you wanna live your life
You can get yourself connected
To the world that we are thrown to, yeah

But all I need is somewhere to lay
Somewhere to lay my hat up
I need someone to love in the middle of the day
I want someone to be, and someone to drive around town
I need someone to love when the chips are down
Love me when the chips are down
Will you love me when the chips are down?
Love me when the chips are down
Could you love me when the world is crashing all around?

You can try and be someone you're not
If that's the river that you want to cross
You can choose the life of a bohemian
Or you can choose the material world

But all I need is somewhere to lay
Somewhere to lay my hat up
I need someone to love in the middle of the day
I need someone to be, someone to drive around town
I need someone to love when the chips are down
Oh yeah
Love me when the chips are down, oh
Love me when the chips are down
Love me when the chips are down
Could you love me when the world is crashing all around?
All around

All I need is somewhere to lay
Somewhere to lay my hat up
I need someone to love in the middle of the day
I want someone to be, and someone to drive around town
I need someone to love, one to love, one to love
Love me when the chips are down
Yeah
Will you love me when the chips are down
Oh oh
Love me when the chips are down

Can love me when the chips are down
And could you love me when the world is crashing all around?

Overall Meaning

The Kooks's song Around Town is an exploration of the human desire for companionship and love amidst the chaos of life. The opening lines suggest that we have a choice in how we live our lives - we can choose to fight and be connected or not. While some people may choose a life of excitement and danger, the singer is more interested in finding stability and love. He simply needs "somewhere to lay [his] hat" and "someone to love" through the ups and downs of life, even in the midst of chaos and crisis. He asks whether his lover will be there to love him "when the chips are down" and when the "world is crashing all around" - suggesting that he needs a partner who will be there through thick and thin.

The chorus emphasizes the singer's need for love and companionship in his life. He repeats that he wants "someone to be and someone to drive around town" with him. This emphasizes the importance of having a partner in one's life rather than going it alone. The second verse suggests that we can choose different paths in life - either a free-spirited bohemian lifestyle or a more materialistic one. However, the singer is less concerned with these external factors and instead focuses on what really matters to him - finding someone to love and be loved by.

Overall, the song emphasizes the importance of love and companionship in life, and suggests that it is more important than material possessions or adrenaline rushes. The singer's desire for stability and companionship is a universal one, and the song's catchy melody and upbeat tempo make it a relatable and fun listen.

As a film student, I thought it was an AMAZING video. Great cinematography, good pace, damn good story arc.  For those of you confused as to why the music didn't "match" the video.  The song was used as a backdrop to the story, not a theme.  James bond intro songs are themes to the movie, the lyrics match the concept of the movie.  In this case the music is used to pace the video. Happens all the time in cinema, you just rarely see it used in actual music videos (because most the people who make them lack this kinda talent)

Very insightful as a reference to bond u just may have a future

I barely even watched the video when I listened to this. Just hearing the song was more than enough personally as the song itself was pure awesomeness on its own.
