The Kooks formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, where they were all students. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Luke Pritchard, got bassist Max Rafferty involved in a college project, which formed the base of the band. After getting lead guitarist Hugh Harris and drummer Paul Garred involved, they took their name from the song Kooks on the 1971 David Bowie album Hunky Dory. When they tried to trademark the name, they found that in the late/mid 1990s a Swedish band by the same name released an album in Sweden called Too Much is Not Enough.
The Kooks released a debut EP and played gigs around Brighton, where they were based at the time. They were signed to Virgin Records.

You're out there having fun
And I need you
I'm alone with this song
About being empty
And the fear of missing out
It's hard to be alone
Up and down the hall
Long hall
Oh god I miss my girl
It's only been a night
I miss the last time
That we had a fight
Isn't it sad?
Won't you say it's bad?
I don't care and if I have to
I'll read your books
Cause they'll remind me of you
And I'll learn your notes
So that I have a clue
And I'll watch your films
So I'll know them through and through
And I'll do the things that remind me of you
And I'll wash my hair in your shampoo
And I'll buy your perfume
And spray it round my room
And I'll smoke your cigarettes
So that I'm dying too
And I'll call you up
Fa la la la
Fa la la la
Fa la la la
Oh
Am I sane?
Am I sane?
Am I sane?
Mmmmmmm
In The Kooks' song "Fa La La," the singer is feeling lonely and missing their significant other. This is evident from the opening lines of the song, where the singer says that they are alone with their song about being empty and the fear of missing out, while their loved one is out having fun. The lyrics convey a sense of desperation as the singer talks about walking up and down a long hall nineteen times, emphasizing the fact that they feel trapped in their loneliness. They go on to describe how much they miss their girl, even though it has only been one night since they were together. The singer is so consumed by their loneliness that they resort to doing things that remind them of their loved one, such as reading books that they like, learning their notes, watching their films, using their shampoo and perfume, and even smoking their cigarettes.
The repetition of the phrase "Fa La La" in the chorus adds a melancholy and almost haunting quality to the song. It feels like the singer is trying to distract themselves from their pain by humming the tune, but it's not enough to make them feel better. The final lines of the song, where the singer asks themselves whether they are sane, further emphasize the toll that loneliness is taking on them.
Overall, "Fa La La" is a poignant portrayal of the pain of missing someone you love and the desperation of trying to fill that void.
