The Kooks formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, where they were all students. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Luke Pritchard, got bassist Max Rafferty involved in a college project, which formed the base of the band. After getting lead guitarist Hugh Harris and drummer Paul Garred involved, they took their name from the song Kooks on the 1971 David Bowie album Hunky Dory. When they tried to trademark the name, they found that in the late/mid 1990s a Swedish band by the same name released an album in Sweden called Too Much is Not Enough.
The Kooks released a debut EP and played gigs around Brighton, where they were based at the time. They were signed to Virgin Records.

I Already Miss You

What I said last I didn't mean
And now that women listen louder
This is what I meant to say
Babe I already miss you
Sweetheart I already miss you
Sweet eyes I already miss you
You know I hate talking on telephones
I'm so sorry its just my way
And now that I'm a little better
There's so much to you I'd like to say
Babe I already miss you
Sweetheart I already miss you
Sweet eyes I already miss you
And you only just walked out the door
In the song I Already Miss You by The Kooks, the singer addresses a past lover whom they miss tremendously. The first lines suggest that there was a previous conversation that may have ended badly, but the singer now wants to apologize and communicate their true feelings. The phrase "women listen louder" may indicate a shift in the relationship dynamic where the woman is now more vocal and assertive. The repetition of "I already miss you" emphasizes the depth of the singer's feelings, while the use of endearing terms like "babe", "sweetheart", and "sweet eyes" shows the intimacy they once shared.
The continuation of the second stanza further indicates the singer's reluctance to communicate over the phone, yet they now feel confident to express their feelings to their former lover. This could imply that the relationship dynamic may have previously been imbalanced or dynamic between the two, with one party holding back. With the bridge, the singer indicates that they want to make up for all the things they couldn't say earlier, and that they want to do better now they feel better. The repetition both in the chorus and the verses creates emphasis, which reveals the singer's yearning to be with their lover once again and to be open with them.
