The Kooks formed at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, where they were all students. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist Luke Pritchard, got bassist Max Rafferty involved in a college project, which formed the base of the band. After getting lead guitarist Hugh Harris and drummer Paul Garred involved, they took their name from the song Kooks on the 1971 David Bowie album Hunky Dory. When they tried to trademark the name, they found that in the late/mid 1990s a Swedish band by the same name released an album in Sweden called Too Much is Not Enough.
The Kooks released a debut EP and played gigs around Brighton, where they were based at the time. They were signed to Virgin Records.

I'd like to meet the girl I'm going to see
Nothing ever changes in me
But you ain't got nothin, nothin on me
The way everybody loves me I wish you could see
Nothing ever change,see me
But I've go to be free
But I've got to be free
Like I said a long time ago things they come and things they go
Nothing
You make me hungry then you make me see
Oh how happy my life can be but
Oh nothing ever change in me
I've go to be free
I've go to be free
I've go to be free
Oh I've got to be free
Oh I've got to be free-hee
Oh I've got to be free-he
Oh I've got to be free
The lyrics of "Nothing Ever Changes" by The Kooks speaks about the desire to find the right person to spend the rest of one's life with, and the struggle to maintain individual freedom. The singer starts by expressing his longing to meet the girl he is going to marry and see. He then lets her know that she has nothing on him, even though everyone else seems to love him. The singer repeats the phrase "nothing ever changes in me" throughout the song, which seems to signify his fear of being stuck in a rut and not growing.
The bridge of the song suggests that the person the singer is addressing makes him feel great, but love alone is not enough, and he must remain true to his nature. The song ends with the repetition of the phrase "I've got to be free," indicating the singer's unrelenting desire for freedom, despite the love he has for the girl.
Overall, the lyrics of "Nothing Ever Changes" portray the tension between love and independence. The singer desires to be committed to someone but is afraid that losing his individuality in the relationship will leave him feeling unfulfilled.
